Montalto, Red Hill South

The right cellar door for a grey-sky afternoon. Walk-in tasting at the bar, then lunch in the main room if you booked ahead. The estate Pinot Gris and the single-vineyard Chardonnay are where the list earns its weight. The garden looks better in winter than most places do in summer.

Two ways into a Peninsula wine afternoon

Walk-in cellar doors or appointment producers

Knowing which kind of tasting you're booking decides the whole shape of the day. Both have their place. They are not interchangeable.

Walk-in · long lunch

Anchor the day on one cellar door. Stay three hours.

Flagship rooms
Montalto, Polperro, Pt. Leo Estate, Red Hill Estate, Foxeys Hangout, Paringa Estate
Format
Walk-in tasting at the bar, optional purchase, then a long lunch in the on-site dining room. The afternoon shapes itself around the table.
Best for
First-time visitors, mixed-interest groups, groups where one person wants the wine and the rest want the lunch.
Booking
Cellar doors take walk-ins; the dining rooms book 2–6 weeks ahead for weekends. Hatted rooms (Laura, Tedesca) book further out.
Vibe
Considered, social, fire-lit in winter. The Peninsula at its most generous.
Appointment · the obsessive afternoon

Two small tastings, one village meal in between.

Flagship rooms
Ten Minutes by Tractor, Main Ridge Estate, Dexter Wines, Quealy Winemakers, Eldridge Estate, Garagiste
Format
Booked tasting with the winemaker or cellar-door manager. Smaller pours, more conversation, often the back-vintages and trial blocks.
Best for
Wine-literate visitors, second-time-on-the-ridge weekends, the trip where the wine is genuinely the point.
Booking
Always required. 1–3 weeks ahead is comfortable. Some producers run by-the-bottle pre-paid tastings; others charge per head, redeemable.
Vibe
Quiet, focused, slightly more like work. Reward exceeds the effort.

Wine country, by place

The hubs that organise the region

Each hub pulls the cellar doors, producers, and long lunches into one stretch of landscape.

Red Hill · village

Balnarring

Balnarring is the village that locals still treat as their own - a cluster of shops, a Thursday morning farmers' market, a bookshop that has outlasted all reasonable expectations, and a road network that somehow always seems to lead back to a cellar door. It sits on the eastern edge of the Peninsula's wine country, closer to Western Port than Port Phillip, and that changes the character: the light is softer, the crowds are thinner, and the vineyards here tend to be smaller family operations rather than destination estates. Balnarring is where you go when you want a Peninsula weekend that feels like the way things used to work before the region became a brand. The beach is genuine and quiet, the coffee is unpretentious, and the drive in from Tedesca or Montalto takes fifteen minutes of roads you've mostly never seen.

Red Hill · village

Main Ridge

Main Ridge is the highest part of the Peninsula wine country, and the most forgiving to pinot noir. A few degrees cooler than Red Hill proper, wetter in winter, and foggy on the right mornings - if you drew the perfect place to grow cool-climate grapes in Victoria, it would look something like this. There is no real village centre, just a crossroads, a hall, and a handful of the most serious cellar doors on the Peninsula scattered through ferny side roads. Main Ridge rewards people who want to understand wine country rather than just photograph it: the single-vineyard bottles from this sub-region are consistently among the region's best, the estates are small and run by the people who own them, and nobody is trying to sell you a wedding venue. Come for a morning tasting at one of the serious producers, then drive ten minutes in any direction for lunch.

Red Hill · village

Merricks

Merricks is where the Peninsula's wine country starts to feel private. There is almost no main street to speak of, just a low-slung hall, winding vineyard roads, and a cluster of estates and restaurants that reward people who know where to turn off. The light is softer here than in Red Hill proper and the bay feels unexpectedly close. It is one of the Peninsula's best places to stay if your idea of a weekend away means vines outside the window, lunch that goes too long, and very little noise.

Hinterland · village

Moorooduc

Moorooduc is the wine country's quieter northern edge — further from the ridge road, less visited, different enough in soil and latitude to grow serious chardonnay that the broader market still underrates. Moorooduc Estate and Barmah Park are the anchors. Use it for a slow cellar-door morning before heading up to Red Hill for lunch.

Red Hill · village

Red Hill

On a misty basalt plateau above the Peninsula's central ridge, Red Hill has arranged some of the strongest food and wine in Victoria into a circuit that rewards the unhurried. A village by strict measure — a general store, a monthly market, vineyard restaurants that don't advertise from the highway — it nonetheless organises the whole upper Peninsula around itself. The winery restaurant cluster here — Ten Minutes by Tractor, Montalto, Paringa Estate, Principia — has no serious peer in the state. Come on Saturday; plan lunch first.

Hinterland · village

Tuerong

Tuerong is where some of the Peninsula's best bottles come from roads most visitors never take. Yabby Lake is the anchor — Halliday Top 100, relaxed cellar-door program — and the same back roads hold Dexter Wines and a cluster of low-volume producers whose fruit ends up in Melbourne's better wine lists. Quiet, specific, worth the detour.

Quealy Winemakers: The Peninsula pioneer that still feels gloriously unpolished

2 May 2026

If you care about how the Mornington Peninsula became more than a pinot monoculture, start here. Quealy is not glossy and that is exactly the point — this is one of the region's formative tasting rooms, built on curiosity, Italian varieties, and a refusal to behave like a tourist estate.

Frequently asked

Three honest answers before you book

What wine is the Peninsula known for?

Pinot Noir and Chardonnay are the benchmark varieties, the cool maritime climate and basalt soils of the Red Hill plateau produce some of Australia's most consistent cool-climate examples. The region also has a growing reputation for Pinot Gris and Shiraz. Over 50 cellar doors are open to visitors, concentrated on the ridge between Red Hill and Main Ridge.

Do I need to book cellar door visits?

Some cellar doors operate by appointment only (Ten Minutes by Tractor, Main Ridge Estate, Paringa Estate). Others welcome walk-ins (Montalto, Polperro, Red Hill Estate). Check before you drive, appointment-only cellar doors are common on the plateau and the experience is better when expected. Weekend afternoons are busiest.

How many wineries are on the Peninsula?

Over 200 vineyards and approximately 50–60 cellar doors open to visitors. Most are concentrated on the Red Hill plateau between Dromana, Red Hill, and Main Ridge. The region is compact, you can visit three cellar doors in an afternoon without rushing if you stay on the ridge.
