Why we’d go

Lindsay McCall's pinot noir and shiraz have been Peninsula benchmarks for decades, the cellar door and terrace restaurant are where you taste that track record without ceremony.

Paringa Estate has the kind of confidence that comes from having done the work for decades. Lindsay McCall's pinot noir and shiraz have long been among the Peninsula's benchmark bottles, and the restaurant understands the assignment: sharp produce, proper service, and a terrace that makes lunch feel like it should continue into the evening.

The cellar door is compact but smart, with staff who know the wines in the glass rather than in a script. Come here when you want less theatre than Montalto and more focus on what's happening in the bottle.

Ideal for a Friday tasting that turns into lunch. The 'LJM' Pinot Noir is the bottle to taste before you leave.

Worth knowing

Best for
Cellar door visits · Long lunches · Wine lovers · Sunset drinks

If you only do one thing

Book lunch and taste the 'LJM' Pinot Noir in the cellar door before you eat, the contrast between cellar and table temperature is part of the education.

Editor's verdict

Paringa Estate does not need to justify itself. Lindsay McCall planted his first vines in 1985 and has been producing some of Red Hill South's most reliable Pinot Noir and Shiraz ever since. The one-hat restaurant is a Peninsula institution. This is old-guard Peninsula - estate-grown, single-vineyard, no fuss - and it still outperforms newer arrivals more often than not.

Visiting

Open daily 11am–5pm; bookings recommended. Dogs permitted on a lead in outdoor areas.

A Winter Peninsula Weekend: The Case for Coming in July

13 April 2026

Short days, cheap rooms, empty dining rooms, a fire in every cellar door with a hearth, and a coast that looks like a different country in a southerly. Winter is the Peninsula's most underrated season and the one that gives the region back to the people who actually live here.
