Eldridge Estate

Why we’d go

Eldridge is where Peninsula Pinot nerds go to geek out, David Lloyd, a shed, a small counter, and the wines lined up for you to taste one against the other.

Eldridge is where Peninsula Pinot nerds go to geek out. David Lloyd runs the estate almost single-handedly, makes the wine himself, and produces single-clone bottlings, MV6, PTG, 115, 777, in quantities so small that most of them are sold out by word of mouth before they reach a shelf. The cellar door is deliberately low-key: a shed, a small counter, Dave behind it, the wines lined up for you to taste one against the other.

The MV6 is the benchmark bottling, the one you will still find on the best Melbourne wine lists and the one that quietly reminds everyone what a Peninsula Pinot can be. The Gamay is arguably Australia's most serious take on the variety. Tastings by appointment, call ahead, and keep an eye out for the Clonal Comparison flight if it is available.

This is not a place to bring a wedding party. It is a place to arrive alone or as a couple, pay attention, and leave with a bottle you will open when you want to remember the afternoon.

Editor's verdict

Eldridge Estate has always been a quiet achiever - planted in 1984, small production, estate-grown, no fuss. The change of ownership in 2022 (Elli and Vicki Tutungi bought from founder David Lloyd) has added energy without disturbing the character. The variety list still includes the thing that makes Eldridge unique on the Peninsula: Gamay. If you want to taste one of the few serious Peninsula Gamay expressions, this is the place.

Visiting

Weekends 11am–5pm; also open daily in January. Bookings advised for 45-minute sessions. Tastings run as a 4-wine flight, charged per person. Gourmet cheese, charcuterie, and tapas platters available. Dogs welcome outdoors on leash.
