Who this suits

Mid-size groups of 11 to 18 who need more capacity than a single trailer boat but do not want a 60-foot offshore vessel; budget-conscious anglers wanting a five to six-hour session at a lower price point; multi-ramp flexibility across the bay shore. Two boats running simultaneously means a single booking can fit a group too large for one trailer.

Who it doesn't suit

Anglers prone to seasickness who need the stability of a larger purpose-built charter platform. Anyone wanting offshore Bass Strait shark or Portland tuna access at a single-day price point; the trailer boat format is bay-rated. Anyone wanting the longer Proline-style multi-day expedition product.

What this charter actually is

Reel Time has operated since 2004 and is structured around a two-vessel trailer boat model: Reel Time #1 (8 passengers) and Reel Time #2 (10 passengers), both trailered to whichever Peninsula ramp best suits the tidal window and the day’s target ground. Operationally similar to I’m Hooked’s multi-ramp model, but with the added flexibility of running two boats simultaneously. That suits groups of 11 to 18 who need more capacity than a single trailer boat can carry but do not want or cannot justify a large offshore vessel like Proline’s fleet.

The price point ($110 to $150 per person) is among the lower end of the Peninsula charter market for the session type. Both vessels have plumbed toilets, and Reel Time #2 has a BBQ available, which makes the product more comfortable than a basic charter boat for a full-day session. The skippers have lifelong local knowledge of the grounds they fish, which is meaningful on Port Phillip Bay where understanding the seasonal shift of snapper grounds and the movement of whiting over sand flats makes a significant difference to catch rates.

Prices may change. Confirm current rates directly with the venue or operator before booking.

Why we chose this charter

Two reasons. The price-to-experience ratio: $110 to $150 per person is honest for a five-to-six-hour session with gear included. And the operational flexibility of the two-boat model: the multi-ramp departure structure means the skippers are not locked into a single location on a day when the fish are somewhere else.

The honest caveat: the trailer boat format means the vessels are smaller than purpose-built charter boats. In a stiff sou’westerly, a five to six-hour session will be more physical than on a 50-foot Westcoaster. Guests prone to seasickness or wanting the most sheltered possible platform should look at Proline Charters instead.

The trip format

Five-to-six-hour sessions with departure times determined by the tidal window and target species. October to December snapper sessions use anchor and burley over southern bay structure, the standard and most effective Peninsula snapper method. Off-season sessions (January to September) shift to drift fishing for King George whiting over sand flats, squid jigging over structure, and targeting gummy shark and elephant shark on appropriate grounds.

The Portland Southern Bluefin Tuna programme is a more ambitious itinerary, distinct from the standard Peninsula product. Confirm exact trip structure and pricing for the Portland run with the operator.

Guests arrive at the nominated ramp at least 15 minutes before departure for gear allocation and safety briefing. The departure ramp is confirmed in advance; the skipper may adjust based on forecast conditions.

Operator and vessel

Over 20 years of Peninsula experience. The operation is associated with Matt Cini and is based out of the Carrum area, though the multi-ramp model means the effective operating territory covers the full length of Port Phillip Bay’s Peninsula shoreline. Skippers hold the commercial charter endorsement required under Victorian recreational fishing regulations. Over 55 verified reviews with a 4.4 out of 5 average on Tripadvisor.

What’s included

Rods, reels, bait, and tackle on standard sessions. Confirm exact gear inclusions, fish-cleaning policy, and licence cover with the operator at booking. The trailer boat format means accessibility arrangements are limited compared to larger purpose-built vessels; confirm boarding requirements directly.

Frequently asked questions

How does the two-boat model work for groups?

Both boats can run simultaneously across the same departure ramp on the same session, with up to 18 passengers between them. This suits groups of 11 to 18 better than any single-vessel operator at the price point. Smaller parties can also book on either boat as a shared session.

What is the price point for a session?

$110 to $150 per person for a five to six-hour session, with bait and tackle included. This is at the lower end of the Peninsula charter market for the session type and is one of the operator's structural advantages.

Do I need my own fishing licence?

Confirm directly with Reel Time at the time of booking whether guests are covered for the day or required to BYO licence. Most licensed Victorian charters cover guests, but confirm in writing rather than assuming.

What is the cancellation policy if weather is bad?

Confirm the operator's exact cancellation policy at the time of booking. The standard Peninsula practice is a full refund or session transfer when weather prevents departure; the specific policy varies by operator.

Does Reel Time run the Portland Southern Bluefin Tuna trips?

Yes. The Portland tuna programme is a more ambitious itinerary distinct from the standard Peninsula product. Pricing and trip structure are separate from the bay sessions; contact the operator directly for current scheduling and lead-time requirements.
