What this ramp is
Sorrento Boat Ramp sits off Point Nepean Road and St Aubins Way, immediately east of Sorrento Pier and the Searoad Ferries terminal. The ramp is managed by Mornington Peninsula Shire; the channel adjacent is managed by Parks Victoria under the Sorrento Local Port Area Plan.
Three concrete lanes, jetties on each side, and a breakwater that shelters the launch area from the prevailing bay swell. This combination makes Sorrento one of the most practical and comfortable launching facilities on the entire bay side. Toilets, playground, picnic areas, BBQ facilities, lighting (so early-morning and late-evening operations are supported).
Tide dependence
Sorrento is all-tide. Approach depth has been documented at 0.3 to 0.8 metres across the tidal range, and the breakwater removes the swell problem that affects exposed bay ramps at low water. For a standard recreational trailer boat, Sorrento launches and retrieves at any tidal state. This is a material advantage over Safety Beach and Rye, comparable to Hastings on the Western Port side.
For deep-keeled or very large trailered boats, even at Sorrento it is prudent to check the Portsea station forecast on Willyweather.
Parking and pressure
Sorrento’s foreshore serves the boat ramp, the pier, and the Searoad Ferries Queenscliff service. The three designated areas combine to over 50 car and trailer spots, but they compete with ferry-day traffic. On a fine summer Saturday, the car park fills early. Plan to arrive by 7am for a morning launch during snapper season and through January school holidays. Christmas week, Easter, and New Year’s Day are particularly tight.
Adjacent paid parking applies in the broader Sorrento foreshore precinct; ramp-specific parking has historically been free but the position is worth confirming with the Shire before your visit.
Best-paired locations and species
Sorrento’s southern position gives the shortest bay-side transit to the snapper grounds and to the Heads area for kingfish and tuna in season:
- Snapper on the southern bay structure, 5 to 15km south and southwest, peak October to December. Anchor and burley over reef.
- King George whiting on the southern bay sand flats, 3 to 8km, peak November to March. Among the most productive whiting grounds on the Peninsula.
- Yellowtail kingfish around the channel edges 3 to 5km west, peak December to April. Light tackle or live bait.
- Southern Bluefin Tuna offshore through the Heads, January to May. Experienced operators only.
- Squid on the seagrass margins near the pier, 0.5 to 2km, year-round. The adjacent Sorrento Pier is itself a productive squid ground.
Charter operators departing Sorrento: Proline Charters at Berth 1, Sorrento Pier.
Permits and fees
The ramp is free to launch from. Mornington Peninsula Shire-managed ramps are free as of 30 April 2026. A Victorian Recreational Fishing Licence is required for recreational fishing.
Safety notes
Proximity to the Heads. Sorrento is the closest bay-side ramp to Port Phillip Heads. The Rip generates significant currents and standing waves, particularly on an ebb tide combined with a southwesterly swell. Departing vessels must stay well clear of the Heads channel. The Rip is one of Australia’s most dangerous tidal passages for small vessels.
Ferry traffic. Sorrento Pier adjacent to the ramp is the departure point for Searoad Ferries. Ferry traffic must be given way. Do not cross the ferry lane without clearance, particularly during departure and arrival windows.
Return-to-ramp alternative. If conditions deteriorate, the nearest sheltered alternative is Rye Boat Ramp approximately 6km northeast. Do not attempt to transit to Queenscliff via the Heads if conditions are marginal; the channel deteriorates faster than bay conditions.
What we did not include
This page covers public boat launch facilities only. The Sorrento Pier fishing experience is covered separately at Sorrento Pier. Searoad Ferries and the Proline Charters berth are not covered here. Sorrento Boat Hire is a separate hire operation.
Frequently asked questions
Can I launch at Sorrento Boat Ramp at any tide?
Yes. Sorrento is an all-tide ramp with a breakwater-sheltered approach. Documented depth of 0.3 to 0.8 metres across the tidal range supports launch at any tidal state for standard recreational trailer boats. Deep-keeled vessels should still check the tidal forecast at Willyweather (Portsea station).
Is there parking for a car with a boat trailer?
Yes, over 50 car and trailer spots across three areas. The foreshore serves both the boat ramp and the Sorrento ferry terminal, so parking pressure is higher than at a ramp-only facility. Arrive by 7am on summer weekends. On ferry-peak days (school holidays, long weekends, Christmas week) the car park can fill before 8am.
What is the maximum vessel size I can launch from Sorrento?
The three-lane concrete ramp with jetties suits most standard recreational trailer boats. The all-tide access removes depth as the primary constraint; the car park turning radius for longer trailers is more often the limiting factor.
Is there an alternative ramp if Sorrento is full?
The nearest alternative is Rye Boat Ramp approximately 6km northeast, generally suitable for most tidal states. For Western Port access, Hastings Boat Ramp is the best-equipped all-tide alternative.
