What this ramp is
Hastings Boat Ramp sits on Marine Parade at the Hastings marina precinct on Western Port’s western shore. From the Mornington Peninsula Freeway take the Hastings exit; follow Marine Parade south to the waterfront. Managed by Mornington Peninsula Shire, free to launch.
This is the busiest and best-equipped public boat ramp in Western Port. The 2024 upgrade, funded through Better Boating Victoria, delivered a new southern pontoon with gangway and Hansa all-abilities hoist, refurbished the northern pontoon, resurfaced the ramp lanes, and dredged the approach. Four lanes, all-tide, with accessibility features unmatched elsewhere in the Peninsula boating network. Adjacent to Westernport Marina, the primary departure point for Western Port charter operations.
Tide dependence
All-tide. This is the defining operational advantage of Hastings over Warneet, where caution is required at low water. With Western Port’s tidal range of approximately 2.5 to 2.8m, all-tide ramp status is materially valuable.
Even at an all-tide ramp, Western Port anglers should still check the tide for fishing-ground access. Channel depth, current strength, and shallow-water locations change substantially with tidal state. The reference station is Stony Point; check Willyweather or BOM tidal predictions.
Parking and pressure
Approximately 84 sealed car and trailer spaces, with a proposed 130 additional overflow. Wide spaces accommodate large trailer configurations that struggle at tighter metropolitan ramps. The all-tide access plus large parking make Hastings a practical choice on busy days, though snapper-season weekends (October to December) and summer school holidays still put pressure on the facility. The four-lane configuration means the ramp itself is rarely the bottleneck; parking is more often the constraint. Arrive by 7am for a morning launch on a fine summer Saturday.
Best-paired locations and species
Hastings accesses the northern and central Western Port fishing grounds:
- King George whiting along the channel margins, 3 to 10km south, peak November to March, year-round availability. Drift over seagrass and sand in 2 to 5m; tidal timing is critical (the “no run no fun” rule).
- Sand flathead on sandy substrate mid-bay, 4 to 8km, year-round on drift or slow troll at 3 to 8m.
- Pink snapper in deeper channel areas, 8 to 15km. Different from the Port Phillip Bay snapper run; this is a Western Port-specific population.
- Leatherjacket at structure and seagrass margins, 2 to 6km, year-round on light tackle.
- Gummy shark in the deeper bay, 5 to 15km, year-round on bottom rigs.
- Australian salmon bay-wide, peak April to September.
Charter departures from the adjacent marina: Western Port Fishing Charters, and I’m Hooked Fishing Charters lists Hastings as a departure option.
Permits and fees
Free to launch from. The Better Boating Victoria upgrade funding does not change the free-to-use status. A Victorian Recreational Fishing Licence is required for recreational fishing.
Safety notes
Western Port tidal range. Approximately 2.5 to 2.8m, significantly larger than Port Phillip Bay. Anglers accustomed to Port Phillip Bay should be aware that channel depth, current strength, and shallow-water locations change substantially with the tide. All-tide ramp access does not mean all-conditions access to all Western Port grounds.
Commercial traffic. Western Port has active commercial shipping approaching Hastings and the oil terminal at Crib Point. The shipping channel must be respected. Crossing or loitering in the channel is prohibited. Check Maritime Safety Victoria guidance on navigational obligations.
Return-to-ramp alternative. Warneet to the south is the next Western Port option but is tide-cautious at low water. For Port Phillip Bay access, transit via the Mornington Peninsula Freeway is impractical from on-water; the bay is a separate journey.
Frequently asked questions
Can I launch at Hastings at any tide?
Yes. Hastings has all-tide access. The 2024 upgrade and dredging confirmed the approach depth supports standard recreational vessels at any tidal state. This is the defining advantage over Warneet, where caution is required at low tide.
How busy does the parking get?
Approximately 84 sealed car and trailer parks with 130 additional overflow proposed. The wide trailer spaces accommodate large trailer configurations. Snapper-season weekends and summer school holidays put pressure on the facility; arrive by 7am on a fine summer Saturday for a morning session.
Is Hastings accessible for users with mobility requirements?
Yes. The 2024 upgrade delivered a new southern pontoon with a gangway and a Hansa all-abilities hoist, the most accessibility-capable ramp in the Western Port network.
Is there an alternative ramp if Hastings is full?
Warneet to the south is the next Western Port option but is tide-cautious at low water and a longer drive from Melbourne. For Port Phillip Bay access, Sorrento or Mornington-area ramps via the Mornington Peninsula Freeway. Hastings rarely runs out of ramp capacity even on busy days; parking is more often the bottleneck.
