Hotel Sorrento

A grand old bay-facing pub-hotel whose best rooms still make Sorrento feel gloriously old-school.

Why we’d go

The front rooms with bay balconies are a convincing argument that the classic Peninsula weekend hasn't been superseded by anything that came after.

Hotel Sorrento has been looking over the bay since the 1870s and, when done right, still delivers the classic Peninsula weekend better than almost anyone. The front rooms are the ones to book, high ceilings, balconies, and views over the water that explain why Melbourne has been escaping down here for more than a century.

Downstairs, the public bar remains one of the great people-watching rooms in coastal Victoria. Upstairs, the accommodation is more polished than precious. It's less of a destination hotel than Jackalope or The Continental, but often more charming for that.

Perfect for a breezy two-night Sorrento weekend with ferries, beach walks, and late pub lunches.

If you only do one thing

Book a front balcony room and stay the second night, Sorrento on a Sunday morning from that vantage is the Peninsula at its least complicated.
