Tootgarook is a small village on the Mornington Peninsula's southern Port Phillip coast between Rye and Capel Sound, 80 km from Melbourne, with a calm bay beach across the highway and the Tootgarook Wetland reserve behind the dunes.

Tootgarook is a small, mostly residential village squeezed between Rye and Capel Sound, and its real identity lives behind the streets in the Tootgarook Wetland - the largest privately-protected freshwater wetland on the Peninsula and a quiet ecological headline most visitors do not know exists. Out front, the village sits across the road from a wide bay beach with shallow water and a long pier; out back, the wetland soaks into the dunes and the migratory bird counts each spring are among the highest on the Peninsula. The village itself has a handful of shops and an unfussy main street and is almost entirely a place locals use. Stay nearby for cheaper Peninsula accommodation than Rye or Sorrento; come to walk the wetland boardwalk and read birds in the reeds.

Boneo

Boneo is the rural triangle between Rye, the back beaches and Cape Schanck, and for most of its history it was almost entirely a farming district. It still feels that way - long straight roads through paddocks, horse studs, the occasional cellar door - but on the southern edge of the district sit Peninsula Hot Springs and RACV Cape Schanck Resort, two of the Peninsula's busiest visitor anchors. That gives Boneo an unusual character: a working agricultural pocket that happens to sit on top of geothermal water and next to a golf-and-spa resort. The Boneo Maze and Wetland is the family-friendly headline, but the real draw is the position - fifteen minutes from a soak, ten minutes from a back-beach walk, and twenty minutes from a long lunch in Red Hill. Stay here if you want the hot-springs belt at your door without the resort vibe.

Bay Coast · town

Capel Sound

Capel Sound is the western half of what was, until 2017, simply called Rosebud West, and the renaming did the place a quiet favour. It is now its own town in the postcodes if not yet in everyone's mental map: a long stretch of bayside foreshore camping ground, a small but lengthening main road of cafés and surf shops, and a residential grid that runs back from the beach in long flat blocks. The Rosebud-Capel Sound foreshore camp is one of the largest beachfront camping grounds in Australia, and for two months every summer it doubles the population of the entire stretch. Outside that window Capel Sound is calm, flat, and uncomplicated - a town that locals use when they want a bay-side walk that isn't busy. Stay here for foreshore camping or a cheaper inland rental; for restaurants, walk or drive five minutes into Rosebud.

Rye

Rye is the pivot point of the lower Peninsula - the last town before Sorrento and Portsea, the first one where the landscape really opens up to the Southern Ocean. The front beach is a long bay-calm stretch with a pier and a century of summer memory behind it; the back beach is where you drive to in ten minutes to remind yourself that the ocean side is an entirely different country. In between sits a main street that has quietly improved itself over the past five years, a brewery precinct in the hills above the town, and Peninsula Hot Springs close enough to slot into an afternoon without rearranging the day. Rye is where families have always come to do nothing in particular, and that remains the right instinct.
