Fingal is a coastal village on the Mornington Peninsula's ocean-coast edge, 90 km from Melbourne, home to Peninsula Hot Springs and adjacent to Moonah Links golf resort and Cape Schanck.
Fingal sits quietly between Rye and Cape Schanck on the Peninsula's ocean-coast flank, and it is the kind of place that earns its reputation through what happens there rather than through what it calls itself. Peninsula Hot Springs has made it a pilgrimage destination for a particular kind of weekend - thermal pools, early morning mist off the coast, a round at Moonah Links, and nothing much else demanding your attention. The Cape Schanck lighthouse is fifteen minutes south. The back beaches are wild and within reach. Fingal rewards the visitor who wants comfort rather than activity.

Golf Course St Andrews Beach Golf Course
St Andrews Beach is the Peninsula's strongest public-access golf story. Tom Doak architecture, world-ranking credibility, and an address anyone can book - that combination is rarer in Australian golf than the prestige market would have you believe. The course sits in coastal duneland near Fingal, with enough exposure to the Bass Strait weather to make the same round play differently depending on when you show up. Go in autumn when the light flattens and the crowds thin. Book well ahead for weekends. Pair it with the hot springs or a southern Peninsula lunch and the whole day holds together as a proper trip rather than an isolated round.

Ocean Coast · cape
Cape Schanck
Cape Schanck is where the Peninsula finally runs out of land, dropping off the plateau into Bass Strait with a drama that still takes first-timers by surprise. The 1859 lighthouse stands on the last headland, the boardwalk threads down through tea-tree to a basalt beach that disappears at high tide, and on a clear afternoon the horizon carries nothing but open ocean all the way to Tasmania. This is the Peninsula's most cinematic short walk, and the cleanest case for why the southern end is worth the drive beyond the vineyards. Come for the lighthouse and the lookout, stay for the Bushrangers Bay walk west along the coast, and time your arrival for the last two hours of daylight.
Peninsula Tip · village
Portsea
Portsea is the Peninsula's quiet trophy. Where Sorrento turns on the theatre, Portsea keeps its back to the bay and its gates closed - this is old-money country, where the holiday houses were built before anyone called them beach houses and the golf club is older than most Australian cities. The village itself is barely a village: a pub, a general store, a scattering of shops around the foreshore, and a short walk down to a jetty that still looks essentially as it did a century ago. But push past the surface and Portsea is the entry point for the whole south-western tip of the Peninsula: Point Nepean is next door, the back-beach surf is five minutes away, and the front beach is one of the most protected swims on Port Phillip. Come for a long lunch at the pub, a quiet morning walk before the day-trippers find Sorrento, or a summer weekend that stays deliberately low-key.
Bay Coast · town
Rye
Rye sits on the lower Peninsula between Tootgarook and Blairgowrie. The bay-facing front beach has a pier and sheltered water; the ocean-facing back beach is a separate outing with different conditions. Point Nepean Road gives visitors places to eat and shop, while the Fingal hot springs are a drive inland. Use Rye as a base for both coasts, and check beach conditions before swimming.
