What yellowtail kingfish actually is

Seriola lalandi is a large pelagic schooling species, typical Peninsula summer visitor 60 to 100cm. Streamlined silver-blue body with the diagnostic yellow tail and yellow lateral stripe, a hard-fighting fish that runs hot and reels hard. The Peninsula population is at the southern edge of the species’ Australian range; kingfish here are summer warm-current visitors rather than residents.

The October 2025 bag limit reduction (from 5 to 2 per day) reflects VFA management of the species’ recovering southern population. Anglers chasing trophy kingfish should prioritise catch-and-release for fish over 80cm; the slot retention frame supports the recovering population.

The eating quality is excellent. Pink-white flesh, firm and clean, well-suited to sashimi or grilled at high heat. Larger kingfish are higher in mercury than smaller fish and should be eaten in moderation.

Season and tide

December through March is the summer peak. Outside that window, kingfish are uncommon. The species follows baitfish concentrations; sounder-marked schools of slimy mackerel or yellowtail scad in deeper water typically have kingfish in attendance. Top-of-tide and the early run produce most consistently around structure.

Technique and gear

Boat fishery. Live bait is the gold standard: a slimy mackerel or yellowtail scad rigged on a single 8/0 to 10/0 hook and trolled or drifted past structure. Metal jigs (60 to 200g knife jigs) for vertical work over sounder-marked schools. Top-water poppers when fish are visible feeding at the surface.

Gear is heavy. 24 to 50lb braid, 50lb-plus monofilament or fluorocarbon leader, a heavy spinning or jigging rod that can absorb a fast first run. The first run on a hooked kingfish is the make-or-break moment; many fish are lost in the first 20 seconds when poorly drag-set tackle gives line uncontrolled.

Opportunity ranking by location

  1. Bass Strait offshore (Cape Schanck to Flinders), boat, live bait or jig, December to March. The most reliable Peninsula kingfish ground. Requires offshore-capable vessel and Bass Strait condition awareness.
  2. Port Phillip Heads structure, boat, live bait, December to March. Productive when kingfish push into the southern bay following baitfish. Stay clear of the Rip channel; respect tidal current and ferry traffic.
  3. Inner Port Phillip Bay channel markers and reefs, boat, light tackle, summer. Opportunistic kingfish are taken on lighter gear inside the bay during strong warm-water years.

Frequently asked questions

What is the bag and size limit for yellowtail kingfish in Victoria?

2 per person per day (reduced from 5 effective October 2025 to protect a recovering southern population). Minimum size 60cm total length. Open year-round. The October 2025 bag limit reduction was confirmed by VFA and VRFish; this applies to all Victorian waters including Port Phillip Bay and Bass Strait. Source: VFA. Confirm before fishing.

When are kingfish on the Peninsula?

December through March is the summer peak. Schools track south from warmer waters following baitfish, and concentrate around structure: the Heads at Port Phillip Bay, Cape Schanck, offshore reefs into Bass Strait, and occasionally inside the southern bay around channel markers and reefs. Outside summer, kingfish are uncommon on Peninsula grounds.

Where do I catch kingfish?

Boat fishery almost exclusively. Around the Heads (be aware of the Rip safety considerations), Cape Schanck offshore structures, and the deeper Bass Strait reefs accessible from Sorrento or Portsea. Land-based kingfish are taken occasionally from Portsea Pier in summer when fish push into the bay, but this is opportunistic rather than reliable.

What technique works for kingfish?

Live bait is the gold standard. Slimy mackerel, yellowtail scad, or salmon trolled or balloon-rigged through structure is the canonical approach. Metal jigs (vertical jigging or knife jigs) work when fish are sounder-marked at depth. Top-water poppers produce explosive surface strikes when schools are visible feeding. The species is hard-fighting; gear up: 24 to 50lb braid, 50lb-plus leader, heavy spinning or jigging rod.
