What this location is
Safety Beach foreshore is the section of the Port Phillip Bay shore between Mount Martha and Dromana, anchored by the Safety Beach Boat Ramp precinct. The foreshore includes the boat ramp, an adjacent jetty, public toilets, picnic areas, a playground, and BBQ facilities. The combination makes Safety Beach one of the more family-friendly Peninsula bay locations; the productive fishing happens from the foreshore and the adjacent jetty rather than from a long pier.
The shallow sandy water is the editorial differentiator. While Mornington Pier puts you over 6 to 8m at the outer end and Rye Pier extends 450m to reach productive depth, Safety Beach’s productive water is 1 to 4m and within easy casting distance of the shore. The species mix reflects this: garfish, whiting, pinkies, and squid are reliable; snapper and larger species are less common from the shore (boat sessions reach the deeper grounds offshore).
Tide and access
The tide window is more critical here than at deeper piers. Use the Portsea reference station; the rising tide is the productive period. Low water leaves the bay margin too shallow for effective fishing; high water plus the falling phase produces 4 to 6 hours of usable session per cycle.
The all-abilities access path connects the car park to the foreshore; beach wheelchairs are available via Mornington Peninsula Shire. The boat ramp precinct toilets and picnic facilities support all-day family sessions.
Best technique
Garfish on float rig with bread burley is the most productive Safety Beach method. Light bait fishing for whiting and pinkies on a running sinker close to the sandy edges. EGI jig 2.5 to 3.0 for squid at dawn or dusk along the seagrass margins. Cover ground rather than fishing static; the shallow substrate produces best when the bait or jig is moving.

Frequently asked questions
Is Safety Beach a good family fishing spot?
Yes. The flat beach, shallow water, all-abilities access, public toilets, picnic facilities, and playground at the adjacent boat ramp precinct make this the friendliest land-based bay-shore location on the Peninsula. Less crowded than the piers; easier supervision of small children; productive enough that families come away with a feed when the tide is right.
When is Safety Beach productive?
Rising tide on the warmer months (November to March) for whiting, garfish, and pinkies. Squid are year-round but most active dawn and dusk. Avoid sessions at low water; the bay margin shallows substantially and most of the productive ground is exposed or too shallow to fish effectively.
Can I fish from the beach without a pier?
Yes. Cast from the beach across the shallow sandy substrate. A long-cast surf-style rig is unnecessary; a simple running sinker or paternoster on a 2 to 3kg light rod is sufficient. Garfish off the beach on float rig and bread burley is the most productive Peninsula approach for the species; the shallow shore-based environment suits the technique perfectly.
