Port Phillip Bay
Mornington Pier is one of the most consistently productive land-based fishing platforms on Port Phillip Bay's eastern shore. The 250-metre concrete structure at Schnapper Point puts you over water that runs 6 to 8 metres at the outer end, deep enough for snapper through dusk and night tides, shallow enough for King George whiting on the sandy edges. On a warm Saturday in November there will be 30 rods on it before 7am.
Portsea Pier is the deepest land-based fishing platform on the Peninsula and the only one that puts you within rod-cast of yellowtail kingfish in summer. Squid run year-round; snapper move through in spring and autumn; salmon push past the Heads on winter incursions. The pier sits adjacent to the Rip and the Heads channel, which means proximity to genuine tidal current and to one of Australia's most dangerous tidal passages. Treat both with appropriate respect.
At 450 to 500 metres, Rye Pier is one of the longest land-based fishing structures on Port Phillip Bay and among the most genuinely family-appropriate. The 2022 to 2024 rebuild replaced ageing timber with a concrete-and-timber structure featuring all-abilities access, seagrass habitat beneath the boards, and consistent water depth at the outer end. Squid is reliable year-round; whiting run hard November to March; the pier is wide enough that families with young children do not compete with serious anglers for space.
Safety Beach foreshore is the bay-shore alternative to the busy piers. Shallow sandy water, accessible to children and beginners, productive for garfish and whiting on the rising tide, year-round squid potential. Lower crowd density than Mornington or Rye even on summer weekends. The least-pressured productive Peninsula bay-shore fishing spot. Pairs naturally with a family beach day.
Western Port
Cowes Jetty sits on Phillip Island's northern shore, accessible by car via the San Remo bridge or by ferry from Stony Point. The jetty fishes Western Port's northern channel system, putting you on the same productive ground as Hastings and Stony Point but from the eastern side of the bay. Snapper through summer, whiting on the running tide, squid year-round.
Hastings Jetty is the working-waterfront pier of Western Port. Adjacent to Hastings Boat Ramp (the busiest and best-equipped Western Port public ramp), the jetty fishes the same channel system that produces fish for the boat anglers launching nearby. Flathead is the bread-and-butter species year-round; snapper through summer, whiting on the running tide, bream around the pylons. Family-friendly with the working-port caveat: keep kids back from the channel edge given commercial traffic.
San Remo Jetty fishes the entrance of Western Port, where the bay meets Bass Strait. Tidal current is the strongest of any Peninsula land-based location, which translates directly into productive sessions on the run and unproductive sessions at slack. Snapper through summer, whiting on the rising tide, squid year-round. The location requires the heaviest sinkers and the most precise tide planning of any pier in the Peninsula network.
Stony Point Pier fishes a deeper, faster, more demanding channel than most anglers expect when they arrive. Western Port here is not a shallow sheltered bay; it is a tidal channel running 5 to 10m deep with current that makes a lightweight rig irrelevant within two minutes. Plan around the Stony Point tidal reference, use the right sinker weight, and arrive on the run; the pier produces consistently for snapper, whiting, and squid. Arrive uninformed about the tidal dynamics and you'll spend three hours retrieving rig from drift and leave with nothing.
Tooradin Inlet is the tidal estuary at the northern arc of Western Port. Less well-known than the bay piers, productive for bream and flathead in the inlet channels and shallow margins, with night sessions for mulloway during the warmer months. The location requires the same Western Port tide planning as the rest of the bay; the shallow inlet character means the fishing window is narrower than at deeper Western Port locations.
Bass Strait fringe
Flinders Pier does one thing better than almost any other public structure on the Peninsula: it concentrates calamari. The 327-metre heritage-listed pier on the Peninsula's south coast points into Western Port Bay, sits over mixed reef and sand bottom, and holds southern calamari year-round. The squid population beneath and around this pier is exceptional, partly due to the weedy sea dragon habitat (a Parks Victoria-listed marine biodiversity site) and partly due to current patterns that push food past the structure on both flood and ebb. Come here for squid first.
Gunnamatta is the Peninsula's premier Bass Strait surf beach for anglers, and one of Victoria's most dangerous surf beaches. The 3km face absorbs anglers without crowding, but the rip currents are real and the beach has killed experienced people. Fish above the high-water mark, never wade, never turn your back on the swell. The salmon winter run is the headline event; mulloway in summer night sessions is the trophy reward. This is not a beginner location.
Point Leo is the more accessible of the Peninsula's south-coast surf beaches. Less exposed than Gunnamatta, less crowded with surfers, with productive gutter structure visible at low tide. Australian salmon during the winter run; opportunistic snapper and gummy shark on quieter days. The Peninsula's introduction to surf-cast fishing for anglers not yet ready for Gunnamatta's full Bass Strait exposure.
