Boneo is a rural locality on the Mornington Peninsula's southern back-beach belt between Rye and Cape Schanck, 90 km from Melbourne, home to the Boneo Maze, the Peninsula Hot Springs / Alba thermal-springs district and the RACV Cape Schanck Resort.

Boneo is the rural triangle between Rye, the back beaches and Cape Schanck, and for most of its history it was almost entirely a farming district. It still feels that way - long straight roads through paddocks, horse studs, the occasional cellar door - but on the southern edge of the district sit Peninsula Hot Springs and RACV Cape Schanck Resort, two of the Peninsula's busiest visitor anchors. That gives Boneo an unusual character: a working agricultural pocket that happens to sit on top of geothermal water and next to a golf-and-spa resort. The Boneo Maze and Wetland is the family-friendly headline, but the real draw is the position - fifteen minutes from a soak, ten minutes from a back-beach walk, and twenty minutes from a long lunch in Red Hill. Stay here if you want the hot-springs belt at your door without the resort vibe.

Cape Schanck

Cape Schanck is where the Peninsula finally runs out of land, dropping off the plateau into Bass Strait with a drama that still takes first-timers by surprise. The 1859 lighthouse stands on the last headland, the boardwalk threads down through tea-tree to a basalt beach that disappears at high tide, and on a clear afternoon the horizon carries nothing but open ocean all the way to Tasmania. This is the Peninsula's most cinematic short walk, and the cleanest case for why the southern end is worth the drive beyond the vineyards. Come for the lighthouse and the lookout, stay for the Bushrangers Bay walk west along the coast, and time your arrival for the last two hours of daylight.

Fingal

Fingal sits quietly between Rye and Cape Schanck on the Peninsula's ocean-coast flank, and it is the kind of place that earns its reputation through what happens there rather than through what it calls itself. Peninsula Hot Springs has made it a pilgrimage destination for a particular kind of weekend - thermal pools, early morning mist off the coast, a round at Moonah Links, and nothing much else demanding your attention. The Cape Schanck lighthouse is fifteen minutes south. The back beaches are wild and within reach. Fingal rewards the visitor who wants comfort rather than activity.

Bay Coast · town

Rye

Rye is the pivot point of the lower Peninsula - the last town before Sorrento and Portsea, the first one where the landscape really opens up to the Southern Ocean. The front beach is a long bay-calm stretch with a pier and a century of summer memory behind it; the back beach is where you drive to in ten minutes to remind yourself that the ocean side is an entirely different country. In between sits a main street that has quietly improved itself over the past five years, a brewery precinct in the hills above the town, and Peninsula Hot Springs close enough to slot into an afternoon without rearranging the day. Rye is where families have always come to do nothing in particular, and that remains the right instinct.
