What this ramp is
Warneet Boat Ramp sits on Rutherford Parade on Western Port’s eastern shore. From the South Gippsland Highway, turn onto Baxter-Tooradin Road and follow the foreshore road. Managed by Mornington Peninsula Shire, free to launch, with Better Boating Victoria funding supporting ongoing precinct upgrades.
Two concrete lanes with a central pontoon, fish-cleaning station, and recently rebuilt North and South jetties (Parks Victoria). Smaller and quieter than Hastings. Warneet serves the northern Western Port recreational fishing community and is the primary access point for the Warneet–Tooradin productive whiting, flathead, squid, and gummy shark grounds.
Tide dependence
Warneet requires careful tidal planning. Exercise caution at low water.
Primary sources describe Warneet as all-tide cautious at low tide. In practice the ramp is usable across most of the cycle, but the approach shallows at low water to the point where caution is required. This is not the absolute barrier at Safety Beach, but it is not the freely all-tide access at Hastings either.
Western Port’s tidal range of approximately 2.5 to 2.8m is one of the larger tidal ranges in Victorian recreational boating waters. The difference between high-water and low-water depths at Warneet is substantial. The Stony Point reference station is the relevant source. Use Willyweather or BOM tidal predictions.
Conservative default: launch between two hours before high water and two hours after high water for vessels over 4.5m or with a deeper-than-standard draft. If you are visiting from Port Phillip Bay and unfamiliar with Western Port’s tidal range, treat this ramp as tide-dependent until you have personal experience of its low-water characteristics.
Mandatory safety statement. Check the tide before driving to Warneet Boat Ramp. Set a Willyweather alert for the Stony Point station before departure. Arriving at low water on a tide-sensitive ramp with a vessel on the trailer is a serious inconvenience at best and a safety incident at worst.
Parking and pressure
Parking is available for cars and trailers but fills quickly on summer weekends and during whiting and snapper seasons. The tidal launch window and the parking pressure coincide; anglers targeting the ideal high-water departure window arrive simultaneously. On a summer Saturday morning around high tide, the car park fills rapidly. Arrive at least one hour before the preferred launch time. Overflow expansion is planned but the current status should be confirmed with the Shire.
Best-paired locations and species
Warneet accesses the productive northern Western Port grounds:
- King George whiting on the northern Western Port margins, 2 to 8km, peak November to March. Drift over seagrass in 2 to 4m; tidal timing is critical for the northern arm.
- Sand flathead on sandy substrate, 2 to 6km, year-round.
- Squid on seagrass edges, 1 to 4km, peak autumn to winter. Productive at dawn and dusk.
- Gummy shark in deeper bay areas, 5 to 12km, year-round on bottom rigs.
- Mulloway in deeper channel areas, 5 to 15km, year-round, targeted specifically by experienced Western Port anglers.
- Pink snapper in deeper bay, 8 to 15km. Western Port’s own population, distinct from the Port Phillip Bay warm-water snapper run.
Permits and fees
Free to launch from. Mornington Peninsula Shire-managed ramps are free as of 30 April 2026. The Better Boating Victoria upgrade funding does not change this. A Victorian Recreational Fishing Licence is required for recreational fishing.
Safety notes
Tidal range. Western Port’s 2.5 to 2.8m range means the bay looks and behaves like a different body of water at different tidal states. Channel depth, current strength, and shallow-water positions shift with the tide.
Cross-current. The northern arm of Western Port is narrower than the central bay; tidal currents through Warneet on the ebb and flood are measurable. Be aware on departure and approach.
Return-to-ramp alternative. Hastings Boat Ramp approximately 20km north is the primary alternative. Four lanes, all-tide, large parking, and the 2024 upgrade including all-abilities pontoon. If you cannot safely return to Warneet at the planned time and the tide is dropping, head for Hastings.
Frequently asked questions
Can I launch at Warneet at any tide?
Cautiously. Warneet is described in primary sources as all-tide cautious at low tide. The approach shallows at low water to the point where care is required. Vessels over 4.5m or with a deeper-than-standard draft should plan launches between two hours before high water and two hours after high water at the Stony Point station.
How busy does Warneet get?
Less than Hastings, but the parking is constrained relative to peak demand. The tidal launch window and the parking pressure coincide: anglers targeting the ideal high-water window arrive simultaneously. Arrive at least one hour before the preferred launch time on a summer Saturday near high tide.
Is there an alternative ramp if Warneet is full or unsuitable?
Hastings Boat Ramp 20km north is the primary Western Port alternative — four lanes, all-tide, large parking capacity, with the 2024 upgrade including all-abilities pontoon and hoist.
