What pinkies actually are

Pinkies are juvenile snapper (Chrysophrys auratus) under approximately 35cm. The legal classification is the same as adult snapper; the editorial distinction is the practical fishing approach. Adult snapper sit deeper, hit harder, and require heavier rigs; pinkies hold in shallower bay water (2 to 6m), take smaller baits, and respond to lighter gear. The October to December adult snapper run is a separate event from the November to February pinky season, even though the species is identical.

The eating quality is excellent on legal-size pinkies. The flesh is the same firm white snapper texture, with a slightly milder flavour than larger adult fish. Pinkies are an underrated table option, particularly for the angler who wants accessible, family-friendly fishing without the gear cost and skill demand of adult-snapper sessions.

Season and tide

The summer peak (November to February) is when pinkies are most reliably catchable on the Peninsula. Outside that window, pinkies are still present but less concentrated. The morning rising tide on a calm day is the productive window for pier sessions; mid-tide for boat drift over sandy 3 to 6m edges.

Technique and gear

Lighter than adult-snapper gear by design. A 7 foot 2 to 4kg light spinning rod, 2500 size fixed-spool reel, 6 to 8lb braid mainline, 8lb fluorocarbon leader. Small running sinker (1 to 2 ball) above a swivel, 30 to 50cm trace to a size 1 to 4 long-shank or small circle hook.

Bait is small. Squid strip cut to a 2 to 3cm piece on the hook, pipi, fresh pilchard fillet, bass yabby, or peeled prawn. Pinkies investigate before committing; let the fish take the bait fully before striking. Hard initial strikes pull the bait out.

Opportunity ranking by location

  1. Rye Pier, light running sinker, November to February, rising tide. The most accessible land-based pinky fishing on the Peninsula. Family-friendly with all-abilities access; reliable summer sessions.
  2. Sorrento Pier, light running sinker, November to February. The pier and the sandy ground extending northeast hold pinkies through summer.
  3. Port Phillip Bay drift over 3 to 6m sand, light tackle, summer. Boat session targeting pinkies on the sandy substrate of the southern bay; productive within reach of any of the southern bay ramps.
  4. Western Port shallow margins, light tackle, summer. Pinkies move into Western Port in summer and hold over sandy edges; less reliable than Port Phillip Bay.

Frequently asked questions

What is the bag and size limit for pinkies?

Identical to adult snapper because they are the same species (Chrysophrys auratus, juvenile cohort). 10 per person per day, of which no more than 3 may equal or exceed 40cm in length. Minimum size 28cm total length. Open year-round. Cannot be filleted in or on Victorian waters. Source: VFA. Confirm before fishing.

What''s the difference between pinkies and adult snapper?

Pinkies are juvenile snapper, typically under 35cm. They hold in shallower water (2 to 6m) than adult fish, take smaller baits, and respond to lighter gear. The legal distinction is none; the editorial distinction is everything. Targeting pinkies is a different approach to targeting Oct-to-Dec adult snapper run, with different ramps, gear, and seasons.

When are pinkies most catchable?

November through February is the summer peak. Pinkies move onto the bay's shallow sandy edges during the warmer months and feed actively through the day. The morning rising tide is the productive window at the piers; boat anglers can drift the sandy 3 to 6m edges any time the tide is moving.

What gear should I use for pinkies?

Lighter than adult-snapper gear. A 7 foot 2 to 4kg light spinning rod, 2500 size reel, 6 to 8lb braid, 8lb fluorocarbon leader. Small running sinker (1 to 2 ball) with a 30 to 50cm trace to a size 1 to 4 long-shank or circle hook. Bait: small squid strip, pipi, fresh pilchard, or bass yabby.
