Safety Beach is a bayside township on the Mornington Peninsula's eastern Port Phillip shoreline, 70 km from Melbourne, between Dromana and Mount Martha, with a marina and a sheltered swimming beach.
Safety Beach is the long shallow crescent between Mount Martha and Dromana - the kind of bay beach where the water is calm enough for very small children and the ridge behind it is steep enough to put you among vineyards in under ten minutes. For most of its history it was a quiet caravan-and-holiday-house stretch; in the last decade it has slowly sharpened, with a marina at the western end, a handful of smarter houses lining the foreshore, and a couple of genuinely good food stops using the view properly. It is a useful place to stay for anyone who wants a base that works equally for beach mornings and hinterland afternoons.

Safety Beach
Safety Beach is the Peninsula's most reliably calm swimming beach - the name is genuinely accurate - and the right answer when you have a young family, a nervous swimmer, or simply want to walk along a long flat shoreline without the theatre of the back beaches. The water is shallow, warm even by April standards, and the bay rarely produces any real chop along this stretch. The foreshore runs for kilometres between Safety Beach and Mount Martha and is good for long early-morning walks or slow afternoon sits. Martha's Table sits a short stroll away for post-swim aperitivo, and the marina at the northern end is a quiet place to watch the boats at dusk. Best in the early morning or the hour before sunset. The middle of the day on a hot summer weekend can get busy, but the stretch is long enough to find your own patch.

Dromana
Dromana is the town at the foot of Arthurs Seat, and the practical hinge between the bay road and the hinterland behind it. Look one way and the long shallow beach runs uninterrupted toward Safety Beach; look the other and the land climbs fast into pinot country. Because of that geography, Dromana has always carried more than its weight - it is where many of the Peninsula's founding wineries planted their first vines in the 1970s, where Crittenden and the Dromana Estate groundstock still sit, and where the ferry from the ocean side of the ridge puts locals back on the bay in fifteen minutes. The town itself is unpretentious: a foreshore, a pier, a post-war main drag quietly modernising. Use it as a base for Red Hill without paying Red Hill prices, swim in the morning, drive up for lunch, and come back down in time for a sunset on the beach.

Mount Martha
Mount Martha is the Peninsula's best-kept secret for people who only want to do one thing: stop. This is swimming-beach country - a long, gentle curve of pale sand with bathing boxes at the northern end, south-facing enough to catch afternoon sun, and sheltered enough from the wind to be usable almost nine months of the year. The village proper sits up on the hill, compact and quiet, with a bakery, a few cafes, and enough infrastructure to get through a weekend without ever needing to drive further than the beach. South of the village, the coastal track winds toward the Briars wetlands and eventually down to Mornington; north, it runs into the foreshore reserve and the bathing boxes. It is the simplest, cleanest Peninsula day on Port Phillip: swim, walk, coffee, repeat.
Red Hill · village
Red Hill
On a misty basalt plateau above the Peninsula's central ridge, Red Hill has arranged some of the strongest food and wine in Victoria into a circuit that rewards the unhurried. A village by strict measure - a general store, a monthly market, vineyard restaurants that don't advertise from the highway - it nonetheless organises the whole upper Peninsula around itself. The winery restaurant cluster here - Ten Minutes by Tractor, Montalto, Paringa Estate, Principia - has no serious peer in the state. Come on Saturday; plan lunch first.
