Mount Martha is a bayside town on the Mornington Peninsula's eastern Port Phillip shore, 70 km from Melbourne, between Mornington and Dromana, with the most photographed bathing boxes on the bay.
Mount Martha is the Peninsula's best-kept secret for people who only want to do one thing: stop. This is swimming-beach country - a long, gentle curve of pale sand with bathing boxes at the northern end, south-facing enough to catch afternoon sun, and sheltered enough from the wind to be usable almost nine months of the year. The village proper sits up on the hill, compact and quiet, with a bakery, a few cafes, and enough infrastructure to get through a weekend without ever needing to drive further than the beach. South of the village, the coastal track winds toward the Briars wetlands and eventually down to Mornington; north, it runs into the foreshore reserve and the bathing boxes. It is the simplest, cleanest Peninsula day on Port Phillip: swim, walk, coffee, repeat.

Mount Martha Beach
Mount Martha is the gentlest swim on the Peninsula. The beach curves south in a long, shallow arc of pale sand, protected from the prevailing winds, shallow enough for kids, and deep enough fifty metres out for a real swim. The northern end carries the famous heritage-listed bathing boxes; the southern end runs into the coastal reserve and eventually hits the cliff track south toward Balcombe. Unlike the back beaches at Sorrento, this is a swim-first beach rather than a walk-first one. If you only have one bay-facing afternoon on the Peninsula and you want it to feel genuinely restorative rather than dramatic, come here. Easy parking outside of January. A single beach kiosk. Nothing to plan - which is exactly the point.

Mornington was the gateway town for a long time - the first real stop on the road south, somewhere to buy petrol before pressing on to beaches and vineyards. That undersells it now. A genuinely good main street, a Wednesday farmers' market on the Esplanade worth getting up for, a foreshore with bathing boxes and a saltwater pool - Mornington has quietly become a whole-day destination rather than a waypoint. It's also the most practical Peninsula base: north to Mount Martha's beaches, south to Red Hill's vineyards, fifteen minutes from coast in either direction.

On a misty basalt plateau above the Peninsula's central ridge, Red Hill has arranged some of the strongest food and wine in Victoria into a circuit that rewards the unhurried. A village by strict measure - a general store, a monthly market, vineyard restaurants that don't advertise from the highway - it nonetheless organises the whole upper Peninsula around itself. The winery restaurant cluster here - Ten Minutes by Tractor, Montalto, Paringa Estate, Principia - has no serious peer in the state. Come on Saturday; plan lunch first.
