Mount Eliza is an affluent bayside town on the Mornington Peninsula's northern Port Phillip coast, 50 km from Melbourne, anchored by a village café strip and a string of small bay beaches including Canadian Bay and Ranelagh.

Mount Eliza is the Peninsula's northern threshold and, depending on how you read it, either its most affluent commuter suburb or its most underrated bay-side town. Both are true. The village strip on Mount Eliza Way is short, well-fed and self-aware - a few of the best independent cafés on the Peninsula are here - and the back streets fall down to a string of small bay beaches that locals have managed to keep more or less to themselves. Canadian Bay is the headline; Ranelagh has the postcard staircase; Sunnyside is the unofficial nudist beach for the brave. The town is independent-school country - Toorak, Peninsula Grammar, St Catherine's - which sets a particular weekend cadence: tennis-club mornings, café brunches, school-pickup-hour traffic. Stay here if you want a base that is closer to Melbourne than the rest of the Peninsula and quietly better-fed than its neighbours.

Walk to Canadian Bay at sunrise, breakfast on the village strip, late-morning swim at Ranelagh, lunch at one of the strip's small restaurants, beach again before the southerly arrives.

Park on Mount Eliza Way and walk the cliff-top path down to Canadian Bay - the approach is the best part of the visit.

Mornington

Mornington was the gateway town for a long time - the first real stop on the road south, somewhere to buy petrol before pressing on to beaches and vineyards. That undersells it now. A genuinely good main street, a Wednesday farmers' market on the Esplanade worth getting up for, a foreshore with bathing boxes and a saltwater pool - Mornington has quietly become a whole-day destination rather than a waypoint. It's also the most practical Peninsula base: north to Mount Martha's beaches, south to Red Hill's vineyards, fifteen minutes from coast in either direction.

Mount Martha is the Peninsula's best-kept secret for people who only want to do one thing: stop. This is swimming-beach country - a long, gentle curve of pale sand with bathing boxes at the northern end, south-facing enough to catch afternoon sun, and sheltered enough from the wind to be usable almost nine months of the year. The village proper sits up on the hill, compact and quiet, with a bakery, a few cafes, and enough infrastructure to get through a weekend without ever needing to drive further than the beach. South of the village, the coastal track winds toward the Briars wetlands and eventually down to Mornington; north, it runs into the foreshore reserve and the bathing boxes. It is the simplest, cleanest Peninsula day on Port Phillip: swim, walk, coffee, repeat.
