The Mornington Day: How to Treat the Gateway Town as the Destination
5 April 2026
Forget pressing on to the vineyards. A well-built day in Mornington - market, coffee, gallery, foreshore - is one of the cleanest Peninsula visits you can make.

Why we’d goThe window table at sunset in autumn is the single most romantic dinner seat on Mornington's waterfront, and the bay view earns the booking on its own.
The Rocks sits at the end of Mornington Pier and has one of the best positions on the whole bayside: the dining room reaches close to 360 degrees of bay view and the terrace at sunset is among the most romantic tables in town. The kitchen leans seafood, oysters, whole fish, pan-seared scallops, a steady list of things that came out of the water that morning or the morning before, and the cooking is classical rather than adventurous.
That is the right call for the room. The bay is the spectacle; the plate is the support act, and it performs that role reliably. The wine list is sensible and leans into Peninsula producers where it can. The room is best in autumn and winter when the summer weekend queues are gone and the light dropping over Mount Eliza at the end of a meal is unobstructed.
Book the window table for an early-evening reservation in autumn. Arrive in time for the sun to drop over Mount Eliza. Order the oysters, the whole fish, and something cold from the list.
Worth knowing
If you only do one thing
Book the window table for a weekday autumn evening, order the oysters, and stay for the full sunset, the room is a different proposition once the light drops.

The Peninsula is a wine region that happens to be surrounded by water. The seafood story is quieter than the pinot story, but it is arguably the more honest one - and the best of it is very, very good.
