The Mornington Day: How to Treat the Gateway Town as the Destination
5 April 2026
Forget pressing on to the vineyards. A well-built day in Mornington - market, coffee, gallery, foreshore - is one of the cleanest Peninsula visits you can make.

Why we’d goThe old bank vault converted to a private dining room is the single most characterful booking on the Mornington bayside.
The Bay Hotel occupies a heritage-listed former bank building on Mornington's main street, and the architecture earns the visit before you look at the menu. The ground-floor bar sits under original tin ceiling and arched windows, the upstairs bandroom runs live music most weekends, and the building's old vault has been converted into the Peninsula's most characterful private dining space, bookable for small groups who want somewhere genuinely different for a birthday, a work dinner, or anything that requires a room with a story.
The food is gastropub done with an actual point of view: locally sourced, handled with more care than a standard country-pub list, and paired with a bar program that balances craft beer and Peninsula wine in equal measure. Live music turns Friday nights into something closer to a small inner-city venue than a Peninsula town pub.
Book the vault for birthdays and private occasions. Come for the bands on Friday. The most characterful venue in the Mornington town centre, and one of the few that rewards repeat visits for different reasons.
Worth knowing
If you only do one thing
Book the vault for a group occasion and ask the team to build the food and wine around what's on the Peninsula produce list that week.
