Why we’d goThe cellar door the Peninsula wine crowd refers to in lowered voices, not a secret, but genuinely under-visited, and better for it.
Baillieu Vineyard is the kind of place the Peninsula wine crowd refers to in lowered voices, not because it is a secret, but because it is genuinely under-visited. Small, thoughtfully managed, and tucked along a quiet back road, Baillieu produces elegant Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from a Merricks site that rarely makes the day-trip itineraries.
The cellar door is small and the experience rewards people who come with a little curiosity. There is no kitchen, no crowd, no queue. There is the winemaker or a senior team member, a careful flight, and, if the afternoon runs that way, a walk through the vines. The wines reward a second glass; they are the kind of Peninsula bottlings that open up rather than announce themselves.
Check visiting hours before driving, Baillieu runs a smaller schedule than the headline estates. Worth the effort.
Worth knowing
If you only do one thing
Book a tasting and stay long enough for a proper glass, these wines open up rather than announce themselves.
