Why we’d goEvery other cellar door on the Peninsula is built around Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Stumpy Gully is the one that went somewhere else entirely, and got there with a genuine welcome.
Stumpy Gully is the Zuber family's estate, and it shows in the way the place operates, not as a polished hospitality business but as a working vineyard where the people who grow the grapes are usually the people pouring the wine. That distinction matters when you're trying to understand what you're tasting.
The varietal range is the estate's most distinctive feature. Where most Peninsula producers lean hard into Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, Stumpy Gully runs Sangiovese, Marzemino, and Picolit alongside the cool-climate staples. The Marzemino, a northern Italian variety rarely seen in Australian cellars, is the one to ask about specifically. Buy a bottle if it's available; it won't be easy to find elsewhere on the Peninsula, or anywhere else in Victoria for that matter.
Book a tasting and don't rush it. The welcome here is genuine in a way that rewards the slower approach, stay long enough for a proper glass after the flight, and ask whatever questions you have about the varieties on the table.
Worth knowing
If you only do one thing
Ask specifically about the Marzemino, and buy a bottle to take home if there's one available.
