Why we’d go

The Peninsula's most architecturally serious winery stay, where the building, the wine, and the room are all working at the same level.

Port Phillip Estate is the Peninsula's most architecturally serious winery stay. The building is a Wood Marsh-designed rammed-earth monolith set into the slope of the plateau, and it holds the cellar door, the one-hat restaurant, and six large hotel-grade suites that look out across Main Ridge pinot country. The scale is deliberate: you check in, you eat at the restaurant, and the only time you really need to leave the estate is to see more of the Peninsula from outside.

The rooms are generous and quiet, with private terraces facing the vines. The restaurant is one of the best lunch rooms on the ridge, anchored by the estate's own wines and a kitchen that understands the long-lunch brief. Sister estate to Kooyong, the single-vineyard tasting flights run through both.

Book the two-night package with dinner included. It removes almost every decision from the weekend.

Editor's verdict

Port Phillip Estate sits on the same address as Kooyong and shares winemaker Tim Perrin, but is the anchor: the home estate, the accommodation, the dining room, the full infrastructure. The Morillon and Red Hill Pinot Noir wines make a compelling site-specific argument for Red Hill South terroir. Adults-only accommodation, no pets, one-hat restaurant - wine-literate, food-serious destination.

Visiting

Walk-ins welcomed. Standard tasting charged per person (non-refundable); Wine Tasting & Cheese, Single Block & Single Vineyard, and Wine Flights tiers also run - book direct for current prices. No pets permitted on premises.
