Why we’d go

One of the Peninsula's most acclaimed producers has no restaurant, no gift shop, and no marketing, just a working winery and wines that sell out before most people know they exist.

Garagiste is Barnaby Flanders' solo project and a study in small-batch restraint. Barnaby, who also co-founded Allies Wines, makes tiny quantities of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from carefully chosen Peninsula blocks, and the bottles that result routinely appear in the Halliday Top 100 without any marketing apparatus behind them. The project is named for the French garage-wine tradition of serious winemakers working outside the establishment, and it earns the reference.

The operation is deliberately unscaled. There is no big cellar door, no restaurant, no gift shop. Visits are by appointment and typically take the form of a quiet conversation with Barnaby or a senior team member in the space where the wines are made. This is the kind of Peninsula producer who sells through wine clubs and top restaurant lists before anything reaches a retail shelf.

Check the website for current availability. If you can secure a tasting, go, this is the tight end of the Peninsula wine world and the wines deserve the time.

If you only do one thing

Book the appointment tasting rather than buying online, the conversation in the working space is where the wines make sense.
