Why we’d go

The Mornington baker that wine-room people quietly recommend when someone asks where the best bread is, bread-first, small room, loyal locals.

Sourdough Kitchen is the Mornington baker that wine-room people quietly recommend when someone asks where the best bread in town is. The loaves are long-fermented, the crust is proper, and the tight line of pastries in the cabinet, croissants, morning buns, a Danish or two, is pitched at people who actually care about the detail. The coffee is good. The room is small. The locals are loyal.

This is a bread-first shop, and that is its charm. Buy a loaf, a couple of pastries, and something to drink from the bottle shop around the corner, and you have the bones of a Peninsula picnic. The morning bun is what sells out first, it routinely goes before 11am on weekends, which is a reliable indicator of how good it is.

Go early on weekends, the morning bun is gone by eleven.

Breakfast Before the Crowds: Where Locals Actually Eat at 8am

9 April 2026

The long lunches get the headlines. But the Peninsula's first hour of the day - the flat white, the croissant out of the oven, the eggs on a working bakery's sourdough - is the quieter, better-value half of the food story. Here is where locals go, and the order to do it in.
