Why we’d go

Onannon is on the lists of the best restaurants in Melbourne and Sydney before it is on any shelf, and the cellar door visit explains why.

Onannon was formed by three winemakers, Will Byron, Kaspar Hermann, and Sam Middleton, to make tiny batches of restrained, elegant Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The wines have become quiet cult favourites among the people who drink for a living: you find them on the Attica list before you find them at retail, which is the clearest statement a Peninsula producer can make about where its wines sit.

The style is deliberate: low-intervention, minimal oak, acid-driven, built for the table rather than the trophy cabinet. The Main Ridge Pinot is the headline. The Foothills Chardonnay is the winemaker's pick. Neither is priced beyond what the wine delivers, which is rarer than it should be in this category.

Cellar door visits are by appointment, this is a small project with working winemakers attached, so check the website before planning. When you can go, go. Buy a couple of bottles. They are made for a winter Sunday.

Cellar door visits · Wine lovers · Couples · Special occasions

If you only do one thing

Book the appointment tasting and ask to taste the Main Ridge Pinot against the Foothills Chardonnay, two wines, one hour, and a clear argument for why Onannon belongs on the same list as the Peninsula's best.
