Why we’d goThe right stop when the Red Hill cellar doors are at long-weekend capacity, quieter, equally good, and slightly easier on the wallet.
Dromana Estate is one of the Peninsula's founding names and has quietly reinvented itself more than once across its history. The current cellar door pours a line-up that leans on the regional classics, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, alongside a small run of Italian-leaning wines the team has been building out over the past few years.
The estate sits on the quieter, eastern side of the Peninsula wine country, which makes it a genuinely useful alternative when the flagship Red Hill cellar doors are mid-long-weekend bedlam. The tasting counter is unpretentious, the staff are knowledgeable, and the prices sit slightly below the ridge-top average without loss of quality. That combination, founding estate credibility at non-flagship prices, is more useful than it sounds on a crowded Saturday.
Treat Dromana Estate as your decompression stop after a busy morning up on the ridge, or as your first stop on a quieter midweek cellar-door day.
Worth knowing
If you only do one thing
Treat it as your decompression stop after the ridge, prices are lower, the counter is quieter, and the wine is as good.
