Eat & Drink Long Lunch

The Long Lunch on the Mornington Peninsula

The long lunch is the Peninsula's defining dining format. A two-to-three-hour table, estate wine from the vineyard outside, produce grown within five kilometres, and an unhurried service rhythm that makes a Melbourne city restaurant feel rushed by comparison. The Peninsula does this better than almost anywhere else in Victoria.

The strongest version of the long lunch here is built around a vineyard restaurant with a hatted kitchen - a room serious enough to justify the drive, with wine and food working together rather than in parallel. Montalto, Laura, Polperro, and Ten Minutes by Tractor are the obvious landmarks. Below them, a second tier of rooms doing honest, seasonal work without the fanfare: Paringa Estate's garden dining, Port Phillip Estate's panoramic rammed-earth room, and Foxeys Hangout's no-bookings, biodynamic outdoor setting.

The practical advice: arrive before noon to get the full arc of the afternoon. Allow three hours at the table and plan nothing afterwards that requires energy. The day will not improve by trying to squeeze a cellar door tasting in between the dessert course and the drive home.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best long lunch on the Mornington Peninsula?

Montalto (Red Hill South) is the most complete estate: sculpture trail, kitchen garden, and a walk-in Piazza option alongside the hatted main restaurant. For destination dining, Laura at Pt. Leo Estate (Merricks) holds two GFG hats and books four months in advance.

Do I need to book?

Most serious long lunch venues require bookings weeks or months ahead on weekends. Walk-in alternatives: Montalto's Piazza (daily, 11am–5pm), Foxeys Hangout (no bookings accepted), and Rare Hare at Willow Creek (walk-in from 2pm weekends).

When is the best time for a Peninsula long lunch?

Autumn is the strongest season. Vintage is running, the summer crowds have thinned, and the best tables are bookable. Spring is a close second. Winter long lunches with fires lit in cellar door rooms are underrated.

Which long lunch venues are dog-friendly?

Foxeys Hangout and Green Olive at Red Hill are dog-friendly in outdoor areas. Many Little has dog-friendly outdoor seating. Most cellar door restaurants do not permit dogs - check directly before you go.
