Mid-July rain on the Peninsula concentrates things. This is not a weekend that rewards an itinerary. It rewards one deliberate choice: the booking or the plan that stops competing with the weather and uses it instead.

A long winery lunch in July works when the day outside has already made its case for staying in one place for a few hours. Stonier’s dining room and fire make that shape easy: you drive down the Merricks lane in the cold, and there is already somewhere to be when you get there.

This is the right Sunday answer if the week has been busy and the weekend needs to be slower rather than fuller.

MPRG’s winter anchor show - a national survey of works on paper, free entry, running through July. This is the indoor plan that still feels like you did something rather than just waiting for the rain to stop.

The gallery is the right call for a morning or early afternoon when you want cultural weight without the admission question. You can move between it and Mornington foreshore or lunch from here without making a whole-day thing of it.

The season’s ongoing option

Red Hill Truffles and Flinders Truffles are both running through the winter season. If the weekend shape changes last minute, either works as a Saturday-morning anchor with dogs, oak grove, and lunch built into the day. Book ahead for Red Hill; Flinders farmgate days often run without a booking requirement, but check before driving.

If you want one clear centre, book the hot springs and let the rest of the day arrange itself around that.
