Quarters at Flinders, the Bushrangers Bay track, and the Emu Plains Market at Balnarring

Flinders Hotel's pub dining earns a spring Saturday booking, Bushrangers Bay track is in full coastal heath bloom, and the Emu Plains Market at Balnarring Reserve is quietly one of the Peninsula's best Saturday rituals.

Quarters at Flinders Hotel earns a spring Saturday lunch booking for one clear reason: the beer garden comes back into its own when the westerlies ease, and the kitchen is running a specials board that changes with what’s landing locally.

The main dining room at Flinders Hotel is comfortable enough in any weather, but from late October the outdoor tables under the established trees are where you want to be. The pub kitchen does the classics without apology - look for the fish of the day on the specials board, which often reflects what came off the boats at Flinders Pier earlier in the week. The pour list includes local Peninsula wines by the glass, and the bistro doesn’t rush you out. This is a two-hour lunch, not a quick feed.

Cook Street, Flinders. Allow two hours. Book ahead through the hotel’s website - spring Saturdays fill by Thursday.

Pair the afternoon with a walk down to Flinders Pier before or after; the views across Western Port in spring light reward the short stroll.

The Bushrangers Bay track from Cape Schanck is in the best condition it will see all year. The coastal heath along the cliff line is flowering now - banksia, tea-tree, and guinea flower are all open - and the track surface has dried out after winter without the summer dust.

The route drops from the Cape Schanck car park on Boneo Road, follows the clifftop south-east, then descends to Bushrangers Bay itself - a sheltered arc of dark sand that most visitors never reach because they stop at the lighthouse. The bay is worth every step. In spring, the offshore swell is still running, and the rock platforms at low tide carry enough life to hold you for twenty minutes before you start back. The return walk runs to about five kilometres. It’s not technical, but the descent to the beach is steep enough that solid footwear matters.

Cape Schanck car park, Boneo Road, Cape Schanck. Allow 1.5–2 hours return. No booking. Arrive before 10am on weekends.

Pair it with breakfast at Flinders Sourdough in the village beforehand, or a stop at the Cape Schanck lighthouse café on the way back to the car.

Emu Plains Market at Balnarring Reserve runs every Saturday until 19 December 2026, 9am to 2pm, and most Peninsula locals who know it treat it as a non-negotiable Saturday morning ritual rather than an occasional outing.

The market sits on the reserve off Balnarring Road, surrounded by the kind of mature eucalypts that make a spring morning here feel unhurried. The stall mix leans heavily local - growers from the eastern Peninsula, a small number of artisan producers, and none of the import-and-resell noise that creeps into bigger markets. In October, the stone-fruit growers are running late-season strawberries alongside the first of the summer arrivals; the cut-flower stalls are worth arriving early for. There’s enough here for a full basket and enough space to move without queuing. It closes at 2pm and does not extend for stragglers.

Emu Plains Reserve, Balnarring. Saturdays 9am–2pm, running to 19 December 2026. No booking required.

Pair it with a walk through the Balnarring township afterwards, or drive ten minutes south to Merricks for a cellar door afternoon - several are open without bookings on Saturdays.
