EAT - Somers General, Somers

Somers General runs a weekend brunch menu that has no business being this considered in a village this quiet - and that is precisely why it is worth the drive down Eyre Street on a Sunday morning. The general store format means you eat well and leave carrying something: the Peninsula wine shelf stocks producers you won’t find in a Dan Murphy’s, and the pantry section is genuinely curated rather than decorative. Spring is the right time because the verandah opens up, the village road is still calm before the summer crowds arrive from Christmas, and the kitchen runs through the brunch menu at full stretch on a Saturday or Sunday. Order whatever the eggs dish is - it changes - and stay long enough to browse the store shelves before you drive out. Pair the visit with a run up to Balnarring Bakehouse, ten minutes north, for something to take home.

Somers General, Eyre Street, Somers. Allow 45–60 minutes. No booking required for casual brunch, though weekends fill early - arrive by 9:30am to be safe.

EXPERIENCE - Bushrangers Bay Clifftop Loop, Flinders

The clifftop section of the Bushrangers Bay trail is where the Peninsula’s spring wildflower show is most concentrated right now. Native guinea flowers and scurvyweed are coming through the heath above the basalt platforms, and the banksias along the descent track are in bud. The loop runs roughly 5 km from the Cape Schank Road trailhead, drops through tea-tree to the bay itself, then returns via the cliff edge with views back toward Cape Schanck lighthouse. Mid-morning Tuesday through Thursday, this week, the trail is quiet enough to hear the shearwaters working offshore. Wear shoes with grip - the basalt at the bay is always slippery regardless of recent rain. Dogs are permitted on lead on the clifftop section; check Parks Victoria for current fire restriction status before you go. Pair the walk with a stop at Flinders Sourdough, ten minutes back up the road, for a Beach Bun while stocks last.

Bushrangers Bay trailhead, Cape Schank Road, Flinders. Free entry. Allow 90 minutes. No booking.

The National Works on Paper survey - MPRG’s annually contested open prize exhibition - is currently on the gallery’s main walls and runs until Sunday 22 November 2026. This is the show where you can calibrate exactly where Australian practice on paper sits right now: drawing, printmaking, collage, mixed media, all under one prize rubric, all wall-ready. The selection this year spans artists you’ll recognise from interstate prize circuits alongside several you won’t have seen before. It rewards slow looking - give it an hour rather than twenty minutes. The gallery is also running two paper-focused workshops on Saturday 17 October: Jacky Cheng’s Tessellation Folding Workshop (9:30am–12:30pm, bookings essential via Eventbrite) and the free Orizome paper-dyeing session (1:30pm–3:30pm, bookings via Eventbrite). Both sit neatly alongside the exhibition. Pair the gallery visit with a walk down Mornington’s main street for coffee before or after.

Mornington Peninsula Regional Gallery, Civic Reserve, Dunns Road, Mornington. Open daily 11am–4pm. Free entry. Exhibition closes 22 November 2026.
