EAT - The Bay Hotel Mornington, Mornington

The vault is the reason to go. The Bay Hotel occupies a heritage-listed former bank on Main Street, and the private dining room built inside the original vault is the single most characterful booking on the bayside strip. Spring is a good time to use it: the kitchen leans into Peninsula produce, and the room suits a long lunch with wine more than a quick midweek dinner.

Ask the team to build the menu around what’s on the local produce list that week. They’ll do it, and the result lands differently from the standard à la carte read. The gastropub kitchen is capable enough that trusting them produces better meals than navigating the menu yourself. This is a group occasion venue - four to eight people, a reason to be there, and two bottles of something interesting from the Peninsula list.

Book ahead; the vault is a single booking and fills on weekends. The Bay Hotel is on Main Street, Mornington. Allow at least two and a half hours.

Pair it with a walk down to Schnapper Point afterwards - the harbour in early spring evening light earns the detour.

EXPERIENCE - Cape Schanck Boardwalk, Cape Schanck

The Cape Schanck boardwalk is worth doing in any season, but the second week of September is a specific argument for going now. The coastal scrub along the Bushrangers Bay trail junction is pushing out wattle and heath simultaneously - that particular yellow-and-pink combination only overlaps for about three weeks. Once the wattle drops, the moment has gone until next year.

The boardwalk from the car park to the lighthouse platform takes around 45 minutes return at an unhurried pace. Go in the morning before the wind picks up from the south-west - by midday the headland gets exposed. The blowhole below the lighthouse is running well after the August swells; check it from the platform before you drop to the beach level. The Cape Schanck car park is off Cape Schanck Road; Parks Victoria vehicle entry applies, check their website for current details. Dogs are not permitted on the track.

Time it for a 9am start and you’ll have the headland largely to yourself on a Wednesday or Thursday.

Pair it with breakfast at the Boneo Road general store on the way back toward the highway.

The National Works on Paper show opened at Mornington Peninsula Regional Gallery on 5 September and runs through to 22 November 2026. It is in its first full week now, which is the right time to go - before the selected works start selling and before the weekend crowds thin the experience down to whatever’s left on the walls.

NWOP is a genuine acquisition prize, not a local survey show. Works submitted from across the country compete for acquisition and awards, which means the quality ceiling is higher than most regional gallery exhibitions. The 2026 iteration lands across a wide range of paper-based media - drawing, printmaking, and works that push what the category can hold. That breadth is what makes a first visit worth taking slowly.

Entry is free. The gallery is at Civic Reserve, Dunns Road, Mornington. Open Wednesday to Sunday, 11am to 4pm. Allow an hour minimum; the show rewards reading the acquisition notes alongside the work.

Pair it with lunch at Store Ten on Mornington’s Main Street - it’s a ten-minute walk from the gallery.
