EAT - Sourdough Kitchen, Mornington

The morning bun at Sourdough Kitchen is gone by eleven on a Saturday. That is not a warning, it is a scheduling instruction.

Sourdough Kitchen sits at the top of Mornington Main Street and runs a tight, bread-first operation. The morning bun - laminated, properly sticky, dusted with sugar - is the thing to order. After that, a long-fermented sourdough loaf to take home. The room is small and fills quickly with locals who already know what they want. The pastry line is short by design; nothing sits around waiting for you to make up your mind. Winter is the right time to come because the drive into Mornington is twenty minutes quieter than a summer weekend, and the counter feels unhurried before the town wakes up.

WALK - Gunnamatta Ocean Beach, Rye

In July, Gunnamatta looks the way it sounds. The Southern Ocean delivers three-metre swells to an empty beach, and the walk from the car park to the northern clifftop takes you past surf you will not see anywhere else on the Peninsula.

The beach itself runs for several kilometres without a café, a volleyball net, or another person if you time it right. Go at low tide and walk south along the waterline - the cliffs expose rust-orange rock formations that are completely invisible in summer when the crowds focus on the water. The clifftop track above the southern end gives you the full Bass Strait panorama; on a clear winter morning the sea is a deep grey-green and the wind is blunt and honest about what month it is. Unpatrolled year-round, so stay out of the water. The walk itself needs ninety minutes.

DISCOVERY - Pt. Leo Estate Sculpture Park, Merricks

Through 31 August, Mornington Peninsula residents get free weekday entry to the Pt. Leo Estate Sculpture Park. This is the offer to use before winter ends.

The sculpture park at Pt. Leo covers around 25 hectares of the estate’s grazing land and hillside, with around 50 works from Australian and international artists installed across the paddocks. In summer the place draws coachloads. On a Wednesday in July, you may have whole sections of it to yourself. The light at this time of year sits low all day, which does something interesting to the larger outdoor works - particularly the pieces on the upper hill with Port Phillip Bay behind them. Budget ninety minutes minimum; the circuit is longer than it looks on the map. Bring a coat you don’t mind the wind getting into.
