Portsea Twilight

A summer-evening run through Point Nepean, finishing in the Portsea event village.

Early January Summer Portsea / Point Nepean Annual

At a glance

Portsea Twilight is the Peninsula’s signature summer running event, staged at Point Nepean National Park with 5.5 km, 9.5 km and kids’ options. It trades on the rare combination of a protected national-park course, Bass Strait and Port Phillip Bay views, and a finish-line village at the far end of the Peninsula.

What it is

A twilight running event based at Point Nepean National Park, with a fast 5.5 km course, a longer 9.5 km option and a kids’ dash. The course setting is the reason it belongs on the Signature Events list: runners move through one of the Peninsula’s most recognisable landscapes, with Bass Strait on one side, Port Phillip Bay on the other, and the Quarantine Station precinct giving the event its start-line identity.

It is a participatory event rather than a town festival. The visitor value is strongest if you are running, supporting runners, or using the event as the anchor for a Portsea/Sorrento summer weekend.

Who it's for

Runners, fitness groups, active families and Melbourne visitors who want a structured reason to be at Point Nepean in early summer. It suits people who like the Peninsula at its busy, social, high-season edge. It is less useful for visitors looking for a quiet nature walk; Point Nepean is better outside event hours for that.

Where it sits in the Peninsula calendar

Sits in the first pulse of January, before the beach towns settle into their longer summer rhythm. Alongside Portsea Swim Classic and Portsea Polo, it gives the tip of the Peninsula a cluster of active, high-recognition summer events that are easy to understand from Melbourne and highly visual on the ground.

Getting there

Point Nepean is at the far western tip of the Peninsula. From Melbourne, allow at least 90 minutes in clear conditions and materially more in January traffic. Event transport, shuttle instructions and parking rules should be checked with the organiser each year. If staying overnight, Sorrento and Portsea are the practical bases; Rye and Blairgowrie work if you accept the short drive.
