The Sorrento Hotel

Why we’d go

The Sorrento Hotel is the proper village pub of Ocean Beach Road, the one you go to with the in-laws on a Saturday night and everybody leaves happy.

The Sorrento Hotel is the proper village pub of Ocean Beach Road, big, unfussy, full of people, and unapologetic about doing the pub basics well. The bistro menu is the familiar Peninsula country-pub list: a good parma, a reliable steak, a fish and chips that uses real flake, a burger that does the job. The dining room is big enough to absorb the summer crush without losing its local feel, and the bar runs straight through the afternoon into the evening.

This is not the Sorrento meal you tell your Melbourne friends about. It is the one you go to with the in-laws on a Saturday night and everybody leaves happy. That is a real service, and the hotel has been providing it for more than a century. There is a particular skill in doing the unremarkable well and without apology, the Sorrento Hotel has it.

Reliable, central, and absolutely unpretentious.

If you only do one thing

Book or arrive early for lunch and keep the order classic, the parma is the reason most people are here.
