Why we’d go

Somers General is the Peninsula's best-kept secret in retail form, a genuinely good general store in a village that has no business having one this good.

Somers General is the Peninsula's best-kept secret in retail form. The room is small, the shelves are tightly curated, Peninsula pantry goods, a cheese counter, a wine shelf that leans local, pastries and sourdough that would hold their own on Mornington's Main Street, and the weekend brunch menu is one of the quiet highlights of the Balnarring side of the Peninsula.

What makes the place special is that it feels like it should not exist. Somers is small, sleepy, and almost never on the day-trip list. Finding a genuine general store here that is punching well above its postcode is one of those small Peninsula discoveries people return to every trip. The cheese counter and the local wine shelf alone would justify the detour from the Balnarring area.

Drive out on a Sunday morning. Stay for the brunch. Leave with a basket.

Breakfast Before the Crowds: Where Locals Actually Eat at 8am

9 April 2026

The long lunches get the headlines. But the Peninsula's first hour of the day - the flat white, the croissant out of the oven, the eggs on a working bakery's sourdough - is the quieter, better-value half of the food story. Here is where locals go, and the order to do it in.
