The Peninsula with Kids: A Day That Doesn't Punish Anyone
10 April 2026
A working plan for parents who want the region to feel like a holiday, not a logistics problem. One lookout, one lunch with a garden, one beach, one coffee on the way home.
An enormous foreshore pub a short walk from Rye's front beach, family-friendly, deck-oriented, and the right answer on a warm afternoon.

Why we’d goThe Rye Hotel is enormous in the best possible sense, a pub that absorbs families, locals, and long-weekend crowds without anybody noticing the place has filled up.
The Rye Hotel is enormous in the best possible sense, a sprawling foreshore pub that absorbs families, locals, and long weekend crowds without anybody noticing the place has filled up. The main deck catches the afternoon sun, the kids' menu is honest, and the kitchen does the straightforward things well enough that nobody complains. The beer garden fills on a hot Sunday; the bar absorbs the overflow.
This is not a fine-dining destination and nobody involved is pretending otherwise. The point is the position, a short walk from the front beach, a deck with enough shade, and a menu that lets the kids eat something they recognise while you work through a schooner and look at the bay. It is the pub that makes a back-beach weekend easier.
Good for the broad, low-key kind of Peninsula afternoon that has nothing to prove.

A drinking guide to the Mornington Peninsula's public houses - the fires, the bistros, the beer gardens, the locals, and the argument for building a whole day around them.

Not a gastropub ranking. Not a beer list. A guide to the five Peninsula pubs that still operate as the social centre of a town, where the food is good, the beer is cold, the rooms are clean, and nobody is trying to be anything else.
