What to Do in Red Hill This Weekend: The Saturday Plan

A market morning, one properly chosen cellar door, and a lunch that earns the drive. The clearest version of a Red Hill Saturday.

Why we’d goRed Hill Market is the single monthly event that pulls the whole Peninsula together, and the best reason to plan an entire weekend around a single Saturday morning.
Red Hill Market is the single monthly event that pulls the whole Peninsula together. Held on the first Saturday of each month from September through May, the market spreads across the Red Hill Recreation Reserve with more than 200 stalls of handmade craft, gourmet produce, plants, artisan food, and the kind of small-run peninsular makers who do not have retail shops anywhere else.
The market is big, unapologetically so, and the best way to experience it is to commit to the full morning. Arrive by 9am for parking, work through the food stalls first, circle back for the plants and the craft, and leave before the late-morning crush kicks in. Coffee from one of the mobile roasters; a breakfast sandwich from the Balnarring Bakehouse stall; honey from a ridge apiarist; a bunch of ranunculus from the Merricks flower grower.
One of the Peninsula's essential weekend experiences. Plan a whole weekend around it, the cellar doors are quieter after midday, and the market sets the mood for the rest of the day.

The Mornington Farmers Market, the Red Hill Community Market, the Balnarring Emu Plains Market, the Somers makers. The Peninsula's market calendar is the region's most under-used event-utility layer - and the one that most obviously shapes a good weekend.

If you've booked a villa with a kitchen, you've booked one of the great food sourcing weekends in Victoria. Here is the shopping circuit - market first, bakery second, wine last - that actually does the region justice.
