Why we’d go

Red Hill Bakery is the morning ritual of the hinterland, the one stop on a Peninsula weekend that requires no planning and always works.

Red Hill Bakery is the morning ritual of the hinterland. The loaves come out of the ovens early, the cabinet fills with the full complement of country bakery classics, vanilla slices, lamingtons, custard tarts, a sausage roll that does the job, and on Saturday mornings the queue runs out the door with cyclists, dog-walkers, and weekenders working on their second coffee of the day.

The bread is the reason to make a detour. A sourdough loaf from here at the beginning of a Peninsula weekend solves half of your meal planning without any effort. Buy two; one is for the car. The custard tart is the sweet thing to eat at the counter before you get back in the car. The vanilla slice is the thing you take home for someone else.

Go early on Saturday to beat the queue. Everything you actually came for will still be on the shelves at 8am.

9 April 2026

The long lunches get the headlines. But the Peninsula's first hour of the day - the flat white, the croissant out of the oven, the eggs on a working bakery's sourdough - is the quieter, better-value half of the food story. Here is where locals go, and the order to do it in.
