Why we’d go

The only Peninsula cellar door where you leave understanding exactly where Mornington Chardonnay sits in the global conversation, and how close it is getting.

Prancing Horse is one of the few Peninsula cellar doors where the tasting deliberately includes wines made thousands of kilometres away. The estate is certified organic and biodynamic, the Pinot Noir and Chardonnay are thoughtful, but the real signature is a comparative flight that pours Prancing Horse's own bottles alongside carefully chosen Chablis and Burgundy from the owners' imported French portfolio. It is the most direct way on the Peninsula to understand where local Chardonnay sits in the global conversation, and the most honest answer to how close Australian cool-climate wine is getting.

Tastings are intimate, by appointment, and often run by the owners themselves. The cellar door overlooks the estate vines with the bay visible through the trees. The Pinot Gris is an unexpected highlight for anyone arriving expecting only Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.

This is the tasting for anyone who has already worked through the obvious Peninsula estates and wants a different kind of afternoon, one where the wine list keeps raising the stakes.

If you only do one thing

Book the comparative flight, specifically to taste your own Prancing Horse Chardonnay against the Chablis, and let the owners explain what they are trying to close the gap on.
