Why we’d go

A proper bistro that changes its menu with what the boats have brought in, the kind of coastal cooking that makes the southern Peninsula feel like it finally has what it deserves.

Pier Street Kitchen is what the Peninsula's southern coast has been missing, a proper bistro that understands the ocean starts at the end of the street. The room is compact and softly lit, the menu changes with whatever the boats have brought in, and the chef knows how to cook a whole flounder without apologising for it.

Start with the oysters from Flinders Pier itself. Go to the fish course, then something lamb or duck from the smaller meat list. The wine program is tight: a handful of Peninsula estates on the by-the-glass list, a longer reach through Victoria and Tasmania on the bottle side, and sensible pours of Champagne when you need them.

Book for Friday night in winter if you can. This is the kind of village dinner people remember more than the trophy tasting menus.

If you only do one thing

Book for Friday night in winter, start with the Flinders Pier oysters, and let the kitchen steer you to whatever the boats delivered that day.

A Winter Peninsula Weekend: The Case for Coming in July

13 April 2026

Short days, cheap rooms, empty dining rooms, a fire in every cellar door with a hearth, and a coast that looks like a different country in a southerly. Winter is the Peninsula's most underrated season and the one that gives the region back to the people who actually live here.

Breakfast Before the Crowds: Where Locals Actually Eat at 8am

9 April 2026

The long lunches get the headlines. But the Peninsula's first hour of the day - the flat white, the croissant out of the oven, the eggs on a working bakery's sourdough - is the quieter, better-value half of the food story. Here is where locals go, and the order to do it in.
