Why we’d go

Nazaaray is one of the true eccentrics of the Peninsula wine scene, the one that cannot be replicated, and that is precisely the point.

Nazaaray is one of the true eccentrics of the Peninsula wine scene, and that is the entire point. The estate is tiny, the owners are hands-on, the wines are naturally fermented with wild yeast, and the guesthouses on site are made from reconverted 1930s train carriages, the kind of one-of-one experience you cannot contrive in a marketing brief.

The wines are genuinely idiosyncratic. They will not taste like the Peninsula average; they will taste like whatever the vintage, the wild yeast, and the owners' instincts decided they would be in any given year. For anyone who finds the ridge cellar doors starting to blur together, Nazaaray is the reset, an ocean-coast estate making wine in a way that nobody else on the Peninsula is attempting.

Call ahead. Tasting hours are limited and the welcome is personal. Stay the night in one of the train carriages if you can, there are only a few Peninsula wineries that do accommodation, and none of them do it quite like this.
