Why we’d go

The deck does most of the work before you open the menu, a proper bayside pub in the Australian coastal sense, unfussy and generous.

Dromana Hotel is a pub in the proper Australian coastal sense, huge, slightly informal, with a deck that runs the width of the foreshore and an enormous bay view that does most of the work before you even open the menu. The kitchen does the straightforward things well, parma, schnitzel, steak, fish and chips, a passable pizza, and the bar rotates through reliable Peninsula taps.

You do not come here for the food to surprise you. You come for the deck, the bay view, a cold glass of something, and the afternoon that follows. Families are welcome, groups are absorbed without trouble, and on a warm Sunday the place turns into the best cheap long lunch on the bayside. The Dromana foreshore position is one of the best on the bay, Jetty Road Brewery is two minutes away if you want to extend the afternoon.

Get a deck table. Order the fish and chips. Stay for a second round.
