# The Mornington Peninsula Wine Region

The Mornington Peninsula Geographical Indication sits 70 kilometres south-east of Melbourne on a maritime peninsula defined by Port Phillip Bay to the west and Western Port to the east. The cool mesoclimate - shaped by afternoon sea breezes from both directions and the elevation of the Red Hill plateau - produces wines of unusual precision: Pinot Noir with fine tannin and longevity, Chardonnay with taut acid and complexity.

Vineyards and visitor cellar doors are spread across areas including Red Hill, Main Ridge, Merricks, Merricks North, Balnarring, Moorooduc, Tuerong, Dromana, Arthurs Seat, Mornington, Portsea, and Flinders. The Red Hill plateau and its southern neighbours - Main Ridge and Merricks - form the historic and commercial core.

The benchmark varieties are Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Secondary strengths include Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc, and Viognier. A small but committed group of producers is expanding the canon with Tempranillo, Gamay, and late-harvest styles.

## Subregions

**Red Hill plateau** - the cool, elevated core. Home to Montalto, Ten Minutes by Tractor, Paringa Estate, Polperro, and the majority of the region's most celebrated producers.

**Main Ridge** - the highest point of the GI at up to 400m. Home to Main Ridge Estate (the oldest) and Kooyong. Wines here have marked intensity.

**Merricks** - lower-altitude, more maritime-influenced. Stonier Wines and Scorpo are the anchors.

**Moorooduc / Tuerong** - warmer, near the bay. Yabby Lake and Dromana Estate.

**Balnarring / Flinders** - the southern fringe; cooler and windier. Smaller producers, often appointment-only.

## Frequently asked questions

### Where exactly is the Mornington Peninsula wine region?

The GI spans the southern half of the Mornington Peninsula, roughly from Dromana in the north to Flinders in the south. The Red Hill plateau - centred around Red Hill, Red Hill South, and Main Ridge - is the heart of the wine-growing district, sitting at 100–400m elevation.

### What grapes grow best on the Mornington Peninsula?

Pinot Noir and Chardonnay are the benchmark varieties. The cool maritime climate, basalt and clay soils, and relatively low yields produce wines of elegance rather than power. Pinot Gris is a strong secondary variety; Pinot Blanc is made well by several producers.

### How does the Mornington Peninsula compare to the Yarra Valley?

Both are cool-climate Victorian regions focused on Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, but they read differently in the glass. Mornington Peninsula wines tend to be more saline and precise - the maritime influence is more direct. Yarra Valley wines are often richer and more structured. The Peninsula has the edge for cellar door tourism; the Yarra Valley has more hectares under vine.
