Editor's verdict

The Christmas outing that pays off harder than it has any right to: a real steam train, a real Santa, and an hour of small-child wonder.

The Mornington Railway Preservation Society runs Santa Specials on selected Sundays in December (typically the first three). Kids write letters to the North Pole, there are carols at Moorooduc Station, and Santa works the carriages on a proper heritage steam service.

Book the moment dates open (October). Sessions sell out, particularly the 11am runs. Pair with the Main Street Christmas Parade if your visit lines up.

Dress for sun on the platform and a slight chill in the carriages. Check the operator for current pricing.
