# Peninsula Notes - June 2026

Truffle season begins on the ridge. The fog is back most mornings. Flinders is doing something unusual for a coastal town in winter: it is full.

Keep this for later

**The ridge in the morning.** Fog sits on the Red Hill plateau from about June onward in the kind of dense, directional way that makes the vineyard rows disappear fifty metres from the road. It burns off by ten. The hour before it does is the reason people who live up here choose it over the coast.

**Truffle season.** The first truffle dogs are working the Mornington Peninsula properties. The season runs June to August and the Peninsula has a small number of producers who take bookings for hunts - most are intimate, most book out quickly. What this means for the rest of us: the hatted restaurants on the ridge will be shaving truffle over things for the next ten weeks. Order accordingly.

**Flinders in June.** We have been watching Flinders slowly become the destination the rest of the Peninsula pretends it already is. The village centre - the bakeries, the general store, the butcher - operates at the same level of quality as anywhere on the ridge, without the crowds that have made weekend Red Hill feel increasingly like a production. A cold Saturday morning in Flinders, coffee from the bakery, a walk to the beach, lunch at the hotel: this is currently the most considered Peninsula day available.

**What is worth booking right now.** The hatted rooms have availability in June that they will not have in July once school holidays arrive. If you have been meaning to book Ten Minutes by Tractor or Tedesca Osteria and keep putting it off because the Peninsula feels like a summer decision: this is the window.

**A note on the coast.** The Bass Strait in winter is not a swimming coast. It is a walking coast. The light it produces in the late afternoon - low, flat, and moving through the clouds in ways that do not happen in summer - justifies driving to the ocean even when getting in the water is not the point. Cape Schanck on a grey afternoon is one of the better free experiences available within ninety minutes of Melbourne.

A proper wet winter weekend concentrates everything. The answer on a day like this is one indoor booking with some real weight to it - truffle country, a long lunch, or the pools when the air outside is genuinely cold.
