## EAT - Portsea Hotel, Portsea

October is the sweet spot at the Portsea Hotel. The Christmas crowds haven’t arrived, the beer garden tables are mostly free, and Port Phillip is flat and grey-green in the mid-morning light. Come for the fish and chips, which remain the best argument for making the drive to the tip of the Peninsula. The batter is crisp without being leaden and the chips are thick-cut. Order at the bar, claim a bench seat outside facing the water, and let the afternoon arrange itself around you. This is one of those pubs that could coast entirely on location but mostly doesn’t. The kitchen turns over a full bistro menu and the specials board changes regularly. In spring the outdoor spaces are genuinely pleasant rather than merely aspirational. Plan for at least two hours and bring something to read. Check current hours on the website before you go - kitchen service times vary by day.

**Pair with** a walk down to Portsea Front Beach before or after lunch.

## WALK - Baldry’s Creek Reserve, Tuerong

The orchids at Baldry’s Creek Reserve peak in late September and hold into mid-October in a reasonable year. The loop trail through the reserve passes three distinct vegetation communities: coastal scrub, heathy woodland, and a riparian corridor along the creek itself. In spring the wattles are finishing and the ground orchids - spider orchids and sun orchids particularly - appear in the sandy heath sections between the 800-metre and 1.5-kilometre marks. The loop is around 5.5 kilometres and takes 90 minutes at a relaxed pace with stops. The surface is uneven in sections after rain, so closed shoes are sensible. Early morning gives the best orchid-spotting light and avoids the midday heat that collapses the flowers. No dogs, consistent with the reserve’s wildlife values. Access is from the car park on Baldry’s Creek Road, Tuerong. No booking required.

**Pair with** a stop at Balnarring Village on the way home for coffee.

## Correction - Main Street Mornington Festival cancelled for 2026

An earlier version of this article recommended the Main Street Mornington Festival for Sunday 18 October 2026. That recommendation was incorrect: [the organiser](<https://mainstreetfestival.com.au/>) confirms that the festival will not go ahead in 2026 because it could not secure sufficient funding. The organiser lists 17 October 2027 as the next festival. Do not plan a visit around a festival this October; check the organiser’s website for future updates.
