## EAT - The Bay Hotel Mornington

The vault dining room at The Bay Hotel is a converted bank strong room, and it is the most characterful group booking on the Mornington bayside. The building is heritage-listed, the bones are nineteenth-century, and the kitchen runs a gastropub menu that leans on Peninsula produce rather than padding the card with filler. Spring is the right moment: the Esplanade is walkable again after dark, the produce list shifts toward greens and early stone fruit, and the room books out faster once the long-weekend calendar fills. Ask the team to build the food and wine around what’s current on the Peninsula list when you call - they will. This is not a place to order cautiously. Go with six people, let the kitchen set the direction, and book the vault rather than the main room. Allow two and a half hours minimum.

**The Bay Hotel Mornington,** 780 Esplanade, Mornington. Book via the hotel website or call ahead. Pair with a pre-dinner walk along the Mornington foreshore to Schnapper Point.

## WALK - Balnarring to Coolart Wetlands

The verge grasses along Bittern-Balnarring Road carry paper daisies, trigger plants, and early native orchids through October, and the flat 5 km loop from Balnarring Oval to the Coolart Wetlands Reserve boundary is at its clearest now before summer heat bleaches the ground cover. Coolart itself - the heritage homestead and wetlands managed by Parks Victoria - draws migratory shorebirds from September onward, and the freshwater ponds on the reserve edge are worth stopping at for ten minutes in the morning when the light is low. The trail stays sealed and accessible the whole way. Go before 10am if you want the birds active and the grasses backlit. Dogs on leads are permitted on the road-edge sections; check the Parks Victoria Coolart page for current wetlands access. No booking. Allow ninety minutes at a relaxed pace.

Park at Balnarring Oval, Bittern-Balnarring Road, Balnarring. Pair with coffee and a pastry at Somers General on the way home.

## DISCOVERY - National Works on Paper 2026, MPRG

National Works on Paper is an acquisitive prize exhibition, which means every work on the walls is for sale and some will leave the gallery before the show closes on 22 November 2026. That matters because the selection changes character across the run - works come down as they sell, and a return visit in late October reads differently to opening week. The 2026 edition at Mornington Peninsula Regional Gallery fills the main survey space with drawing, printmaking, collage, and mixed works on paper from artists across the country. The gallery is free to enter and takes about an hour if you read the labels properly. MPRG’s permanent collection rooms are worth the extra twenty minutes on the way out. This is one of the few national survey shows that comes to the Peninsula rather than requiring a trip to the city, and it closes before summer arrives.

**Mornington Peninsula Regional Gallery,** Civic Reserve, Mornington. Open 11am–4pm. Free entry. Runs until 22 November 2026. Pair with a late lunch on Mornington’s Main Street, a ten-minute walk from the gallery.
