**Rye Hotel - foreshore beer garden, first proper spring Saturday**

The Rye Hotel’s beer garden works at any scale, but a warm spring Saturday is when it makes the most sense. Tables face north, the Port Phillip foreshore is directly across the road, and the afternoon light stays long enough to justify a second round. The kitchen keeps it straightforward - schnitzel, burgers, a daily special on the board - and that is exactly right for this setting. Nobody is coming here for a tasting menu. They are coming because a pub this size, with this much outdoor space, fills up without ever feeling crowded, and that is harder to pull off than it looks. Arrive by midday to secure a deck table on a fine weekend; by 1pm the garden runs full. Check the specials board when you sit down, then stay longer than you planned.

**Rye Hotel**, Point Nepean Road, Rye. Walk-ins welcome; larger groups should call ahead. Allow two to three hours.

Pair it with a loop to Ocean Eight Vineyard at Tuerong before or after for a contrast in pace.

**Cape Schanck clifftop track - wildflower peak, open views, no crowds yet**

The boardwalk from the Cape Schanck carpark to the lighthouse takes about thirty minutes return and offers nothing subtle: basalt clifftops, Bass Strait below, and in late September the coastal scrub either side of the path thick with heath-myrtle and pink swamp heath in flower. This is the window before the school-holiday crowd finds it again. Go on a weekday morning and you may share the track with almost nobody. The wind off the Strait is still cold - bring a layer - but the light is clean and the wildflowers are at their densest now, before warm weather accelerates the bloom and thins it out. The viewing platform at the lighthouse end looks straight down to the rocks below; it is one of the Peninsula’s most direct confrontations with the Southern Ocean.

**Cape Schanck**, via Cape Schanck Road. No vehicle entry fee. Allow one hour minimum and check Parks Victoria for changed conditions before travelling.

Pair it with a stop at Flinders General Store on the way back for coffee and something to eat in the car.

**National Works on Paper 2026, MPRG - closes 22 November**

The National Works on Paper prize exhibition has run at Mornington Peninsula Regional Gallery long enough to have built a genuine following among collectors and working artists, and the 2026 edition is the reason to go to the gallery this spring rather than waiting for a more convenient weekend. NWOP shows the full range of what contemporary Australian artists are doing with works on paper - drawing, printmaking, watercolour, mixed-media works - selected from a national field. The gallery hangs it well, the scale is manageable in ninety minutes, and free entry means there is no threshold to cross. The show runs until 22 November 2026, which sounds comfortable until October fills up. Tuesday to Sunday, 11am to 4pm.

**Mornington Peninsula Regional Gallery**, Civic Reserve, Dunns Road, Mornington. Free entry. Open Tuesday–Sunday, 11am–4pm. Allow 60–90 minutes.

Pair it with a walk down Main Street Mornington afterwards for coffee at Store Ten.
