## EAT · Dromana Hotel

The deck at the Dromana Hotel does a specific thing that most peninsula pubs cannot: it puts Port Phillip Bay directly in front of you without a road, a fence, or an architecturally ambitious structure getting in the way. In spring the deck earns its keep properly. The afternoon westerlies are still gentle, the bay flattens out to a pale jade, and a second round makes complete sense in a way it rarely does mid-winter.

The kitchen runs a reliably unfussy menu - good fish and chips, pub classics done without fuss, daily specials worth asking about at the counter. The point is not the food in isolation. The point is the deck table, the bay, the unhurried pace of a spring Saturday afternoon with nowhere you have to be by five.

Arrive before noon on Saturday to get a deck table; walk-ins are the norm but the good spots go fast on fine weekends. The Dromana Hotel is on Point Nepean Road, Dromana. Give yourself two hours minimum.

Pair with a walk along the Dromana foreshore afterwards, or combine with the Dromana Community Market the same morning.

## EXPERIENCE · Greens Bush in Flower

Greens Bush - the largest remnant heathland on the peninsula’s ocean side - peaks in late September. Right now the ground layer is carrying spider orchids, trigger plants, and heath. This is the fortnight when the bush smells of wattle and damp earth rather than dust, and when the light through the stringybarks hits at an angle that makes the whole thing look improbable.

Parks Victoria lists two short circuits from Baldrys Crossing: the Baldrys Short Circuit is 1.6km, while the Baldrys Long Circuit is 3.6km. Choose the short circuit for a quick look at the heathland, or allow more time for the longer circuit. Wear shoes with grip, the clay sections hold moisture for days after rain, and go in the morning before the wind picks up off Bass Strait.

Start at Baldrys Crossing, Baldrys Road, Main Ridge. There is no entry fee for Mornington Peninsula National Park.

Pair with lunch at the Flinders Hotel afterwards, a 20-minute drive south.

## DISCOVERY · Dromana Community Market
